Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
So Ashleigh Barty will go into Wimbledon as favourite and No 1 seed and an Australian press and public expecting her to win the tournament.
She's got no chance.
She's got no chance.

But viva la Ash on becoming World no. 1. Remarkable effort in just 3 short years.

Nicely done Doubt she will make the quarter finals. I note Murray won his comeback tournament.
He and his mother are pretty odious, up there with little Ley Ley and his mother.

Found this couple of rippers while looking for something else:
Oh dear......
Dear oh dear oh dear...

Great result for him although the media will, no doubt, overreact & start calling him the next Newcombe etc. Fortunately, he seems to have a level head on him that should see him through the bullcrap.
Oh dear......

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
15-year-old Cori Gauff topples 39-year-old Venus Williams... well done her. She was born in 2004. 2004, FFS... the Williams sisters were already in double figures in terms of combined Grand Slam titles by then!
As for the men... oh dear. Next Big Thing Tsitsipas and Next Big Thing Zverev both lose in the first round. Former Next Big Thing Dimitrov does, as well. The wasted generation seems to be extending itself every year, the youngest man with a GS title to his name is 30-year-old Marin Cilic. Can we just jump straight to the semis with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and a random big serving oldie to make up the numbers?

This tournament is a gimme for Joker who has a ridiculously easy draw.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
I have a feeling he will end up with the most majors of the three. Federer surely only has one more in him at most (though we were saying that 5 years or more ago!) while Nadal will probably get three or four more French titles but not sure about the other surfaces. Djokovic could win the majority of them for the next three or four years the way it’s looking. Would be fitting if they all finished level though.
It’s five years since there was a new male Grand Slam champion - a streak not seen since the late 1800s when only Wimbledon and the US existed. Anyone’s guess who the next one will be, when the big three next all trip up or break down together - may well just be a veteran journeyman in the right place at the right time.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Any draw not involving Federer or Nadal is a piece of piss for him. The young Polish guy matched him for two sets yesterday, but nobody’s capable of doing so for five.
Last year’s finalist Kevin Anderson went out yesterday, which along with the early departure of Isner, is bad news for those who want to see the new 12-12 tie-break rule called into action! Who will face Novak in the semis is wide open, probably Raonic who again is too one-dimensional a player to test him.

They should make the junior competition open to anyone under 30 next year...JGK wrote:Meanwhile the youngest male quarter finalist is 29 this year.
I’m sure there were years in the past where being 29 would have made you the oldest quarter-finalist!

Actually, Goffin is only 28. A real child prodigy, by the standards of current men’s tennis...
