Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
I watch the odd Federer match for his artistry and Kyrgios for invention (if not his brain implosions) but otherwise I have totally given tennis away.

The last junior (29-year-old Nishikori) departs. Bautista Agut is this year’s journeyman sacrificial lamb in the last four.
Remarkably, Federer and Nadal will meet at Wimbledon for the first time since their legendary 2008 final.

Rafa is favourite.
This has been an incredibly tedious Wimbledon.

In men’s singles terms, anyway... the competition effectively starts tomorrow.JGK wrote:Rafa is favourite.

The top three are, if anything, getting better, and the younger players further away from competing with them. A couple of decent sets seems their limit. On this evidence I think it’s quite possible they will continue to collectively dominate for the next four or five years. I also think it’s quite possible that no male player born in the 90s will ever win a Grand Slam title, though maybe some will mature later or sneak one by default.

It's certainly not out of the question that someone born in the 2000s wins one before someone born in the 90s.
Felix Auger-Aliassime was born in Aug 2000 and he's about 20 in the world.

Yeah, I thought FAA might be the one to jump a generation, but being born in a different millennium didn’t seem to make a difference in terms of failing to step up to the mark at this year’s Wimbledon.JGK wrote:It's certainly not out of the question that someone born in the 2000s wins one before someone born in the 90s.
If Federer and Serena take the two titles, we will have the same champions as 16 years ago!

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Federer and Nadal still producing the goods, 11 years after their previous Wimbledon meeting...
This is the equivalent of, say, if Borg and McEnroe had played each other in a semi-final in 1989, or Becker and Edberg doing so in 1999, or Sampras and Agassi in 2009... you get the idea. And I wouldn’t rule out them being back here in 2029, and not just to take on Bahrami and Leconte in the exhibition doubles!

That was probably Fed’s final. I think he’ll be lucky to jag a set in the final.

One set all in the final. Joker wins the first in a tight tie break and Fed smashes it 6-1 in the second, after which Joker takes a “toilet break” thus showing again why everyone prefers Fed over him.

Fed now down 2 sets to 1 without having conceded a break point, let alone a break of serve.

Joker gets the break in the 5th and should win it from here. But given the quirks of tennis scoring, Federer is now guaranteed to have won the most points and games in this match.

Big advantage for Joker in serving first in this set. Fed now has to serve to stay in the match against the best defensive player in history.

Choke for the ages for Federer. 40-15 up when serving for the match. Loses 4 points in a row.

10-10 in the 5th.
Federer is going to remember that choke for the rest of his life, esp when Rafa and Joker go past his grand slam totals.

12-12. First ever 5th set tie break at Wimbledon. Jokers already won 2 tiebreaks today so would be feeling good.

And Joker wins it. If you look at the stats you wonder how he did. What a machine.
First time since 1948 that someone has saved match points in the men’s final.

That’s incredible, I’d have thought it would happen at least, say, 1 in every 5?JGK wrote:And Joker wins it. If you look at the stats you wonder how he did. What a machine.

Federer had it in his hands and let it slip, but still, he’s pushing 40, it’s remarkable he can produce this.
As for the career totals, I suspect he’s won his last and might think about going out (almost) on top after the US Open. But the younger generation are a joke, Nadal will win 4 or 5 more at Roland Garros, and I’d back Djokovic to make 30 Slams.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Federer was playing in his 21st consecutive Wimbledon men’s singles, and his first match back in 1999 was a five-set defeat to Novak! Not that one, obviously... Czech player Jiri Novak, who peaked at world number five in the early ‘00s.
If this was his last Wimbledon singles appearance, though I wouldn’t bet on it being so, going down in five sets to the more famous Novak would bookend his career nicely...

Is it true that Djokovic was given his first name because basically his whole family hates hoovering?
Another epic final.
