Saw Rocket Rod Laver on The Back Page last night and heard him again on the wireless this morning.

What a class act. No pretensions. Got where he got due to hard work and hunger to do well. He spoke about the "benefit" of being in a squad with the likes of Rosewall and Hoad who used to beat him all the time when he was younger as it showed him exactly where he needed to get to and what he needed to do to get better.

Seriously, he must be in tears when he sees the likes of Tomic and his behavious.

I think Tomic is ok..just...certainly not as dislikable as Hewitt was at his age...

I remember watching Laver at a time when he was simply unbeatable...and he was always humble - unlike the Newk/Rafetr types who made fortunes off the oz public, with rafter famously setting up residency in the Bahams years ago to avoid paying tax

MIAMI: Bernard Tomic has suffered the fastest defeat in ATP history, crashing out of the Miami Masters hardcourt event in his first match following hip surgery in January.

The world No.74 lost 6-0 6-1 to Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in a record 28 minutes, 20 seconds, the shortest ATP Tour match ever recorded, beating the old mark by a mere minute.

Tomic was unruffled by the defeat, in which he lost the first nine games.

"This was the first match back after the operation. It's all part of the rehabilitation process," Tomic said.

"I'm not disappointed. I just have to keep working to improve my game."
Tomic was playing for the first time since January 14, when he retired against Spanish world No.1 Rafael Nadal after losing the first set of his first-round match at the Australian Open.
He underwent surgery a week later and has been rehabilitating for the past few weeks.
The previous record for the shortest match was set in 1996 at the Sydney International when Greg Rusedski beat Carsten Arriens 6-0 6-0.

Nick Kyrgios sledges Stan Wawrinka by claiming Thanasi Kokkinakis 'banged your girlfriend'

August 13, 2015 - 1:35PM
David Sygall
Nick Kyrgios has sparked a social media storm after footage was broadcast of the Australian tennis badboy appearing to personally trash-talk Swiss opponent Stan Wawrinka during a match in Montreal.

Reaction has been swift after Kyrgios seemed to mutter to Wawrinka "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that mate", referring to Australian colleague Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Wawrinka was reported to have had a difficult break-up with his ex-wife Ilham earlier this year.

The Swiss veteran, who has won the French Open and Australian Open, retired hurt trailing 0-4 in the third set with a back injury.

It is believed Kyrgios' comments were in reference to 19-year-old Croatian player Donna Vekic, who has reportedly been dating Wawrinka following the end of his marriage.

The incident was the lowlight of a tense second-round Rogers Cup clash between the pair at the Montreal Open. Wawrinka had earlier yelled at Kyrgios and hit a ball towards his head.

Kyrgios lost the first set 7-6 but bounced back to take the second 6-3.

Much as it hurts to admit it, for once the SBM pitchfork set are right (blind squirrel, acorn, etc).

Nick, you are exactly as much of a complete turd as they say you are.

Both Kyrgios and Tomic are out of control. Obviously the punishments they are receiving aren't harsh enough to make them stop and think. Perhaps they should be banned from playing for six months? Maybe that will do the trick.

Ideally you would ban him for at least 1 Slam (since fines would be insufficient) and use of Tennis Oz facilities. Can't imagine that Tennis Oz would want to ban him from the Oz Open, since that would be a lose-lose situation for them.

I thought the convention was, you weren't kerniggetted until after you retired, eg Sir Donald, Sir Garfield, Sir Len, Sir Richard the Mass Debater, all gonged on the next list after jacking it in.

One would think so, but guess Bradley Wiggins set the bar.

You guess wrong, my friend ....... Chris Hoy became Sir Chris in '09, and subsequently won gold at London 2012

I'm not sure he was the first, but the precedent wasn't Sir Bradley.

That said, like others here I think knighthoods should wait until after retirement for sportsmen/women.

Hadn't he announced his retirement but been coaxed back nine months later, by which time he had been Sir Dicked?
