The shooter has been named. The name is considerably harder to spell than Smith or Jones.

To answer Lardy's question, in light of the above the DT will have no compunction whatever in calling him every name under the sun, and making sure he does so at least as loudly and with at least as many cameras in front of him as that other bloke, the actual, current President (and he'll make sure he gets in first to make Obama look like a copycat).

We may as well all get used to it. Trump is Melbourne Cup day's surest winner.

Gunman named

US media is naming the Orlando shooter as Omar Mateen, a 30-year-old US citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, whose parents are from Afghanistan, citing two unidentified law enforcement officers. The BBC is reporting he was not on a terrorism watch list, though he was currently being investigated for a previous unrelated criminal act.

He has thanked his consituents who congratulated him for being 'right' about domestic Islamic terrorists.

What a disgusting piece of shit.

The story on the Fairfax sites says "the shooter's motives were not clear".  It's a gay nightclub FFS.

If Gloria got shot your immediate reaction would be it was because of his public toilet habits ....

Wonder if the hysteria over IS will cloud the real issue they should be looking at which is surely gun control.

I feel so sorry for the mothers who lost sons in this atrocity. I heard one lady on the news who was absolutely inconsolable.

Or alternatively: "Wonder if the hysteria over Gun Control will cloud the real issue they should be looking at which is surely IS"

Being fought out over 145786 interminable rounds on a SBM site near you....and woe betide any LGBTI type who wanders into these 'discussions' with their viewpoint...

Just because someone claims to be a supporter or hangs an IS flag doesn't mean it's terror related. Just an excuse for any nutjob with access to the arms.

If there had been a Rotarian convention in town they would probably have been hit.

ISIS can breed head-cases like Monus and this clown without knowing of their specific existence...in fact that is their deliberate strategy, is it not? The more tenuous the trail, the better, and why would they GAF who does their dirty work anyway?

What I'm saying is this and Lindt, may have happened without IS. The extent to which the existence of IS and it's prop arm may have influenced the events we'll unfortunately never know. Calling these things terror events obviously benefits some sections of some governments.

I would not be so sure.

whites are privileged, yes. But not all, only the white elites & rich who are untouchable in USA. Case in point.

Brock Turner, a stanford univ grad, gets **convicted** for rape, but gets just 3 months in prison.

So you gotta be white, you also gotta be rich & connected white.
then USA is heaven.

I have to say , I tend to agree. What better way to get noticed than to say the words "ISIS" while holding an assault rifle. Man Monis clearly wasn't terror related and used ISIS as a means of attracting attention.

From Crikey today:

Just to point out the bleeding obvious after the Orlando shootings: since the Sandy Hook massacre of school-children there have been 998 shootings causing death in the USA. Two of them have involved shooters who were identifiably Muslim. Several hundred involved the sort of weapons that have no place in a civil society. Oh yes, and 998 of the shooters were male. So is the most serious problem Islam, or should more attention be given to ludicrous gun laws or masculinity?

Surely not... Astonishing if so. Of course 998 shootings is just run of the mill.

Re: Another school shooting in the USA

Why is this still going on?

Meanwhile, - as noted on the UK Politics thread - horrible murder of - by common consent (and appears entirely genuine, rare as that may be) - one of the best MPs in the House of Commons. Jo Cox, shot and stabbed to death in the street near to her constituency surgery office in Yorkshire. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-36550304

A shockingly rare event still in the UK. That's no consolation, at all. But in the US, it seems shootings are part of a far too widely accepted fabric of life.

Why is it still going on? Yes, I know the ways of the powerful and rich gun lobbies there. I know the Constitutional Amendment (2nd), drafted for completely different times, a different society (in militia preparation for British invasion), and vastly different technologies (your basic single-shot rifle, not assault weapons with long-range machine-gun capabilities).

But still it's the same question.
