IS are apparently "claiming" it though the apparent shooter was a white man in his 60s. Authorities say it's not being treated as "terrorism" so presumably no known far-right motive either.

Predictably the comment is that it is mental illness, not guns which are to blame. Surely without the guns the mental illness suffered by one man doesn't have to end in massacre.

I guess when you consider that Texas has the laxest gun laws (i.e. basically none) in the US, it's hardly surprising that some nut gets hold of a semi-automatic.

Fifty years ago Kinky Friedman wrote, "the ballad of Charles Whitman" which describes a mass shooting. If interested the song can be uploaded.

i'd gone to Austin a while ago for some work at the Uni. Saw the place where Whitman murdered all those folks. It was quite disconcerting looking at that pleasant academic environment, and then imagining people being shot to pieces all around you.

Watched a bit of the coverage. Every polly and most hack journos made a point they were praying for victims and their families. Fat lot of good that does. Religion and xenophobia remain a pretext for violence in most parts of the planet. The failure of the Seppos to address gun control and religioids will remain ongoing.
