Still think England should go with their strength with their top seamers rather than double-pronged spin. Swann is a great foil to the pacemen but Monty hasn't always been as successful as he was against the limp-wristed Indians.

I wouldn't rate many teams' chances if Monty bowls the way he did in India, certainly not Australia.

Didn't Swann take more wickets?

Sounds silly to say, but in conditions favourable to spinners, Monty is the best spinner in the World. Can be very ineffective on a flattie, though.

Stated only Monty because Swann's a lock in the team, who played all four tests as opposed to Monty's 3. Monty did bowl well better than Swann in Mumbai though, and was very good in Kolkatta too. Shit in Nagpur.taipan wrote:tricycle wrote:I wouldn't rate many teams' chances if Monty bowls the way he did in India, certainly not Australia.

Yeah I know but Swann is still the England no 1. Monty will only play if they use two spinners.
One could argue that the biggest difference between the England and Indian attacks was Anderson. The loss of Yadav hurt India badly.

Nah, Swann and Panesar outbowled Ojha and Ashwin. And yeah, Anderson was also the best seamer on either side. Explains why England won so comfortably at Mumbai and Kolkata.

Aye, agreed. It was a post meant for if they went with two spinners and about writing Monty off. I don't think they will.taipan wrote:tricycle wrote:Stated only Monty because Swann's a lock in the team, who played all four tests as opposed to Monty's 3. About the India series, England were superior in every form, even spin bowling. Yadav was a huge blow though, could've played a huge part.

Yadav was a big blow, definitely. I don't think that was the difference, though. It was the fact they picked three spinners that underperformed.
Re: What England seam team do you - expect, - hope for, come the Ashes?
Yadav wouldn't have changed the series, there was still the rest of the batting, fielding and bolwing. But still was a blow after his first test effort, and the selections were crazy after that.

That was part of the problem - afterwards it was the whole 'three spinner' thing, Harby being the worst.

Aye, and as if that wasn't enough, four in Nagpur.

True that. India versus East Pakistan. Now there's a marquee series.
About the England seamers- Roland Jones seemed to have more control than Meaker in practice and them EPP matches when I saw them while Dernbach couldn't bowl to a chair. Though Roland Jones' career's f*cked.

Yeah, TRJ's career has been ruined by some lush from Sydney.

Well with Huss gawn, lets face it they'll be bowling to the offspring of the likes of Graeme Wood, Greg Ritchie, Wayne Phillips.
That's why I am hoping for Plunkett et al ... we won't have anyone as good as those blokes

Plunkett was a real prospect before Kevin Shine got hold of him.

Plunkett was a prospect - prodigious outswing at high 80s pace. Although I don't think a lot of things were Shine's fault - he should help take the blame for Plunkett.
Liam was a young lad who was constantly rehearsing his follow-through on the way back to his run-up. Which obviously means that someone was making him think about trying to remodel his action.

"Remodelled action" - too often a euphemism for f'ed up by an "expert".
Anderson, Cooley also comes to mind.

They say he used to have a classical side-on action. They say he used to swing it more than James Anderson at a similar to even faster pace. Then he spent a Winter at Loughborough and came back mechanical, front-on, and inconsistent, his head full of thoughts about his follow through and wrist positions. Real shame.
He can bat as well. Real potential there. Arguably England's biggest wasted talent of the last five years.
Still, they tried hard to ruin Anderson as well about five years ago. But he was evidently strong enough mentally to ignore all the sh*t advice he was getting and stick to what he does best. Perhaps at the end of the day Plunkett is just a bit weak in the head.

well finally some sense...the montesaurus is prolly better than King Herod and certainly well ahead of the chin who he has comfortably outbowled in most matches where both have been picked...hopefully the gin soaked blimps running english cricket will go for the Chin...Jammy will be bowled into the ground and the poms do not have the depthin their bowling to provide coverage if jammy or finn go down...lady di is cooked and Bres has been exposed as a carthorse

I, too, hope we go for Swann. Looks like Strine will have at least 3 lefties in their top 7, maybe a couple in the tail as well. For all horrie's scrotal-pulling, even he has to admit that 'Chin' is a different prospect to left-handers.

You hope batsmen don't hit sixes against him? I didn't know you cared
Haven't seen this much love since I saw Red drool all over Graeme Smith.
