Bad times.

I have similar feelings about Cyclone Tracy although thankfully we had left Darwin to go to Sydney for Xmas a couple of days earlier.

lardbucket wrote:It is exactly 50 years today since the devastating Black Tuesday Tasmanian bushfires which swept through the southern half of the State, killing about 64 people (I think that was the final official toll) in 1967. I still have vivid memories, probably qualifying as flashbacks, of a terrifying and foolish drive with my neighbour FROM safety at the school I attended in Sandy Bay through and to extreme danger at home on the Taroona boundary. The house we lived in there survived, thanks only to a wind change. As a 7 year old I remember my mother's fear, the smell of the fire, and the menacing red glow of the sun through that smoke. It was at around this time that people in the South of the state finally had a sense of how bad the day had been, how many lives and how much property had been lost, and how much damage had been caused.

I remember that experience every year, as well as the devastation that was evident everywhere afterwards.  This year - being the 50th anniversary - the memories are especially strong.

I remember it well. I was 14 at the time. Fortunately we lived in a suburb that escaped damage but i remember seeing the foothills of Mt Wellington on fire & the weird orange glow in the sky. Spent the next few weeks sorting donations of clothing & household goods at the local collection centre.

We seem to have missed all this summers extremes. Not too hot, not too cold, not much wind or rain. Pretty average summer in fact.

I've been at a conference on the Gold Coast for the last few days so have missed the extreme heat. Happily, the Gods decided to extend it all a couple of days back just for me.

I pick up my new car tomorrow too. First thing will be to test the air con!

Apparently* these are going to be the hottest 3 days in a row ever in Sydney. Meanwhile, Perth has it's second wettest day ever. Thank God the climate isn't actually changing (or so News Limited told me) otherwise we might be in some trouble.

I read today that the Tomago aluminium smelter uses 10% of NSW's entire energy capacity! At one stage yesterday they were paying the equivalent of buying petrol at $460 a litre.

Smelter operators play govts on a break. Alcoa recently settled a great deal that screws taxpayers.

Electricity is the major input in aluminium. Alcoa would chew a similar % of Vics power usage.

Sydney maximums revised down overnight. Mercifully it's only expected to get to 36C now. Currently a balmy 32C at my place.

Just been giving Mrs K instructions on how to drive the Tesla so she can take it undercover somewhere.

Meanwhile, there is lightning all around the city.
