Is Bresnan a long shot now?

Hopefully, anyway... had been living off his one time "lucky charm" status for some time. Given he seemed one of the favoured establishment men I didn't expect him to be dropped, but now he has been then he surely needs something remarkable to get a recall.

No way Rankin will ever play again. His remote odds crashed and burned when Ashley Warwicks didn't get the job.
A fast bowler who gets phantom hamstring strains under pressure? Good luck with that...

I'm expecting Timothy Thomas to be picked sometime soon. That's how we roll.

For (purely tangential) comparison ~ ~ ~
Precedents suggest an answer to the OT question of: Four.
(Or five, if you include the uncapped remaining uncapped.)
After Whitewash 1 - 1920-21, 4/16 tourists never played another Test. (Arthur Dolphin, Abe Waddington, Rockley Wilson and also (double international) Harry Makepeace. The first three from Yorks, the fourth born in Yorks.)
"Tykes scapegoated"? Maybe. (Only Wilfred Rhodes survived.) ~ Though to be fair, Wilson was 42 by the end of the trip.
After Whitewash 2 - 2006-07, 4/16 tourists (have) never played another Test. (GoJo and Read, Gilo and Saj. Additionally, Ed Joyce did not, had not and has still not played a Test - which makes a debatable #5. Doesn't qualify under the OT question.)
"Keepers scapegoated"? Maybe.
No I know - no guide. But sort of interesting still, I think.

Poor Saj. Unfairly 'ridden off' (into the sunset) after that tour.

That tour also finished George Bailey's test career - a moral victory of sorts I suppose.

Re: How many Test careers did the whitewash tour end?
So… Pietersen, Bresnan, Carberry, Panesar, Rankin, Swann, Tremlett and Borthwick never played another Test for England (Rankin later played two for Ireland). That’s 8 out of 20, or 40% of the squad!
Tredwell played one further Test, in 2015. Prior’s Test career didn’t last out the following summer.
At the other end of the scale, Anderson, Broad, Root, Stokes and Bairstow are still going strong! So nearly half the current side played in the Shitewash more than 8 years ago.
