Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Today is Hong Kong's biggest day of the year. They have four Group Ones on the card.
The Hong Kong Vase over 2400m
The Hong Kong Sprint over 1200m
The Hong Kong Mile over 1600m
The Hong Kong Cup over 2000m
There are plenty of good horses from all over the world so it should be an interesting day's racing.

The Hong Kong Vase was won by Flintshire from France
The Hong Kong Sprint was won by Aerovelocity from Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Mile was won by Able Friend from Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Cup was won by Designs On Rome from Hong Kong
So it was a very good day for the locals. The highlight was a stunning win in the Mile by Able Friend who came from near the tail of the field to score by more than four lengths.

Ross McDonald has died. He trained many good horses including Weekend Hussler, Courtza, Tristarc, Imposera & Magari. His wife Margaret is the daughter of Bon Hoysted.

High Chaparral was euthanised yesterday aged 15. He was an outstanding racehorse winning 10 of his 13 starts including the 2002 Epsom Derby , 2002 Irish Derby, 2003 Irish Champion Stakes & the Breeders Cup Turf in 2002 & 2003.
At stud he was very successful when shuttled to New Zealand where he sired So You Think, It's A Dundeel, Shoot Out, Descarado & Monaco Consul. His results in Ireland weren't quite as good but he still sired a few Group One winners including Toronado.

The Arima Kinen will be contested in Japan today. Many of the big names are there including Just A Way, Epiphaneia, Gold Ship & Gentildonna. I believe the race is to be the farewell appearance for both Just A Way & Gentildonna.

Gentildonna wins the Arima Kinen. It was her final start & she retires with 7 Group One victories to her credit. A great mare.

Tony McCoy announces his retirement: 200 winners so far this season, he will retire at the end of the jumps season in April. He's a freak - the Bradman of jockeys.

He just seemed indestructible, 20 straight jockeys' titles just about guaranteed. Suppose he had to stop somewhere but I suspect he wishes he could go on forever. Can he go out with another Grand National or Gold Cup?

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Question #1 - What will the weather be like in Sydney leading into tomorrow afternoon's big meeting? Track is currently rated as a Soft 6. Will it improve?
Question #2 - How good is the field for the $4,000,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes?
Answer - Very good. I like Criterion, Royal Descent & the Japanese horses.
Unfortunately Contributer is scratched.
Whinge #1 - I was keen on the Extra Double of Scissor Kick into Fenway. Then I checked out the fields online & found both had been scratched.
Whinge #2 - Why does it always rain in Sydney during the Autumn Carnival?

An awful run by John F Kennedy in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. Before the run he was favourite for the Derby, but he ran last of three runners beaten a long way.
Stopped as if shot?????

I have no interest in horse racing whatsoever but my mate convinced me to enter the sweepstake at work.
Got the 4th placed horse so won a tenner. Better than f*ck all.
Still no interest in horse racing though.

Yeah, I've enjoyed the very occasional trip to the races, but generally wouldn't have much interest otherwise, the Grand National excepted - it is a great spectacle, though has become a bit of an uncomfortable watch in recent years. I've only backed the winner once ever...

Me too - L'' EScargot in 1976 was my one and only success. I watch quite a bit of jump racing on the TV, but I now wince when ever I see a faller in the National. I know they've done a lot to make the course safer and the horse welfare facilities are second to none but it's not an easy watch. Still, horses die on the flat tragically.

Country (or picnic) race meetings in Australia are a fantastic day out regardless of your level of enthusiasm for the racing. Cooktown races have been pencilled in for years in the qmy household.
I'll go uber hick on you and say the Mount Isa Rodeo as well. The camel racing season is a hoot too.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
grew up with race horses, punters and jockeys..
my first career ambition was to be a jockey.
I used to hang around the stables from about age 7 - mucking out stalls and cleaning tack...the stable staff tolerated me not least because I saved them some work...the stable I hung out at had an Oaks winner which I was allowed to ride (maybe 10 by then)...my mother was appalled (she had visions of me being a corporate type, a doctor as a stand by and if all other options came to naught I would be a lawyer)...
my dad and the trainers laughed because they knew I would be too big ...
I love going to the races - a city meeting or up the bush...love the horses and the punt

I can't remember my last city meeting (and there haven't been that many). Well the last one I remember is Blue Diamond day in '97. Would have to go to google to tell you who won. Remember a gg being put down on the track and thanking fark for the mobile ban.

In terms of actually going racing, I've been to a couple of meetings at Worcester, but that's about it.

Braddles: I attended the Mt Garnet race meeting annually for about 6 years in the late 90s; great 'picnic' atmosphere, I'm not sure I saw much of the horses though. Went to a few Cairns Amateurs meetings as well; they were good fun with some fine flesh on display and occasionally (and memorably) on offer. I always meant to get to Oak Park (?sic) as well, but never quite managed it.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Today sees the running of the Dante Stakes, a Group Two event at York, and probably considered the most important prep race for the Epsom Derby.
.... and there is a cricket connection.
The favourite for this race (and the Epsom Derby) is Jack Hobbs who recently won a Class 3 Handicap for 3yos by 12 lengths.
Aidan O'Brien has two runners - John F Kennedy who was the Derby favourite until he went awful when resuming last month but possibly the rain-affected track proved his undoing
.... and Ol' Man River who also performed terribly at his only run as a 3yo when a long last in the Two Thousand Guineas.
Among the other runners are Golden Horn who won the Feilden Stakes quite impressively last month & Elm Park who won the Gp1 Racing Post Trophy as a 2yo but was scratched from the Two Thousand Guineas.

Golden Horn beats Jack Hobbs 2 and 3/4 lengths in the Dante,
with the rest of the field another 4 lengths behind
Impressive.

Golden Horn wasn't even entered in the Derby ... and is now quoted as the 2/1 favourite!
But to get him to run, his owner's going to have to stump up £75,000 to supplement him for the race!

What's the prize money if he wins?
