Re: Retirement age
Insurance was always a worry. It used to take ages to get any insurance pay outs, if at all.

Re: Retirement age
I farking hate insurance companies. Admittedly most of them hate me too. Thank farm I don't need to deal with then anymore.
I played three games of soccer in Canberra back in the bad old days at goalie. Knowing swear words in multiple languages cost me more than one busted rob.

Aye. I am heartily sick of all the funeral and life insurance ads plaguing TV (both free-to-air and pay) atm.

skully wrote:Geez, I played over-35 soccer for 4 years. I ended up in goals because no-one else wanted to do it. I ended up with more injuries in my final year (at 40) than I'd ever experienced in any sports. Busted rib, dislocated finger, jarred cervical spine after being kicked in the head diving onto a ball (luckily I have a thick skull!!), pulled groin, pulled hammy. I retired after that!!!
Almost every male I know who played soccer after 40 ended up with a reasonably serious injury. It is a stupid stupid idea.

Aye. Nothing wrong with giving in to the inevitable and finding a decent darts comp.
Lawn bowls clubs can be a little quirky, to put it politely.

Meh, it was good fun, and the socialising during the season was grouse.

When Taips finally pulls the plug, maybe he, skully and BD can do a "My Retirement Rules" TV show where a grumpy retired white guy on a Harley takes other grumpy retired white guys on a tour of  their local food, wine and golfing region to compare which one is better.
Grumpy is just a persona I adopt here sometimes. I get out of bed everyday with a smile on my face and a spring in my step.
And I wish I could do golfing tours, but the old back has other ideas.
... weren’t you shagging for Australia a year ago as well? A more likely cause of your backache.

Re: Retirement age
A tale of two investment advisors.
Both my wife and son work for the same bank so I asked them to recommend an advisor.
Advisor A tells me than the capital invested is subject to a 2% levy which he personally negotiated down to 1.5%. He also told me that all funds invested are subject to Regulation 28, which specifies how funds can be invested.
Advisor B tells me there is no initial levy and the funds are out of the scope of Reg 28 and can be invested however I feel fit.
Which one should I use?

Re: Retirement age
It's very difficult in England because if you start saving hard when you're young (IF you can, many cannot) they will take all your worldly goods including your house off you if or when you go into a care home or need visiting help. If you don't you have no chance of avoiding a 67 years old finish and many jobs are way too tough in various ways to work at that kind of age. It's a nightmare if we are honest. I am 41 with 2 kids and what i have done is i have been putting money aside since i was 17 and i continue to have a fairly tough savings plan. Recently we bought a house in Durham purely to rent out and i'm trying to build a solid floor for us and our kids. I'm self employed and shall we say use the rules to the best of my ability and within the law to keep my outgoings down. Ahem. We have already passed some of our assets to our eldest son so it cannot be got at if one of us needs paid-for care or God forbid a care home any time soon. It many ways you are damned if you do and damned if you don't but we have given up a lot of things so that we can have a better second half of our lives and so far so good and i am looking at retiring at 55 latest, because what we will do is sell both houses in Durham centre (they fetch silly money here) and down size to rural Somerset where my wife is from where it's cheaper than here. But even though things have so far panned out perfectly financially we all have to remember that we are one heart beat away from death so make damn sure you put contentment and fun and love in front of anything else, we only pass this way once and we are not coming back.
