Re: Retirement age
whitburn wrote:It's very difficult in England because if you start saving hard when you're young (IF you can, many cannot) they will take all your worldly goods including your house off you if or when you go into a care home or need visiting help. If you don't you have no chance of avoiding a 67 years old finish and many jobs are way too tough in various ways to work at that kind of age. It's a nightmare if we are honest. I am 41 with 2 kids and what i have done is i have been putting money aside since i was 17 and i continue to have a fairly tough savings plan. Recently we bought a house in Durham purely to rent out and i'm trying to build a solid floor for us and our kids. I'm self employed and shall we say use the rules to the best of my ability and within the law to keep my outgoings down. Ahem. We have already passed some of our assets to our eldest son so it cannot be got at if one of us needs paid-for care or God forbid a care home any time soon. It many ways you are damned if you do and damned if you don't but we have given up a lot of things so that we can have a better second half of our lives and so far so good and i am looking at retiring at 55 latest, because what we will do is sell both houses in Durham centre (they fetch silly money here) and down size to rural Somerset where my wife is from where it's cheaper than here. But even though things have so far panned out perfectly financially we all have to remember that we are one heart beat away from death so make damn sure you put contentment and fun and love in front of anything else, we only pass this way once and we are not coming back.
Very interesting reading. I never knew that in Engerland they take away your worldly good in exchange for the gubmint taking care of you in your old age. But at least someone's taking care of you, in theory. In India it's gotta be your children who do that, or you have a ton of money or you're ******. The latter being my likely fate, as I never felt the need to have the snot nosed bastards.
Best of luck whitburn, you're working hard for the life you wan to lead, and no one can try better.

So they didn't you a purchase order for you're own gift? Please tell me they're that stupid. It would top the RSVP story.

Should have added a couple of zero's onto the amount.
Re: Retirement age
I can remember having a crisis of conscience when I had to sign the p.o for my own retirement party. My evil secretary wasn't helping by suggesting I max out my delegation and charge it on an account code belonging to which ever mining company had pissed me off the most.

Good luck to you when you finish your casual contract.
Would have been funny to reply that you're not attending. Sounds like those running the show wouldn't have known what to do with this information.
