So offspin is not one of Aus's strengths.

what sticks out is the average...it has been the power of NSP persistence that has given him the chance to break the record....still a fine achievement
Mallet and Ian Johnson are standouts and Roo Yardley too in a skill/discipline few Australians have excelled at.

Big Hugh is still our greatest finger spinner by a long shot. Two test hat tricks as well.

agree...was thinking post WW2
seeing Cowper on the list reminded me of all the players who retired so they could make a living. Had forgotten he was a more than useful off spinner

Good point - he might be listed as a medium pacer given that's how he started his career.

F*ck about, how old are you?Brass Monkey wrote:Best I've seen by quite some distance.
Edit: Okay, he's not as old as I thought. His last test was just before I got properly in to cricket.

I started young. Watching the home Tests from about '88, highlights of the away Tests. Had cable from '94ish. They were televising all sorts of non-England Tests from about '96. Other people had consoles, I had weed and hours of Test cricket.

You should've felt old when the match reports you used to read had sketches instead of photos.

Yeah, I enjoyed - loved both from my first dealings with them. They go hand in hand.

Close Dan. The first series I remember was Eng/Pak in 1967.

Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
First test series I remember seeing was when my Dad had a series against the Windies in the early 90s on the tele. He started taking me to see Northants when I was 12 but I wasn't massively in to it. I remember Mark Butcher scoring that century to chase 315 in 2001 which sparked my interest a little but it was the series against South Africa in 2003 that I couldn't take my eyes off, watched almost every session and haven't looked back since.Brass Monkey wrote:vilkrang wrote:F*ck about, how old are you?Brass Monkey wrote:Best I've seen by quite some distance.

Which is weird because the first couple of sessions was basically Smith battering us and doing the same in the next test. Not sure why that made me keep watching but we came back well which was perhaps what inspired me to give this test cricket lark a go.

I think my dad's early enthusiasm started my interest - we got battered by WI - but was inspired by them really - Macko was devastating, Ambrose, Walsh, Winston Benjamin - I didn't really remember who was who, I barely even remember it - my dad triggered it off the other year, I just remember them being demonic and us being feeble
