All that crap about West Ham playing 'a bluddy darkie!' (Clyde Best) wouldn't fly too far either....

Checked Wiki to find out if Warren Mitchell really was a West Ham supporter (he wasn't - Spurs), and found this interesting detail:

"While the series aimed to satirise racism, it actually also gained the support of many bigoted racists who perceived Alf as "the voice of reason".[9]"

That's always been the claim, but Speight was a big mate of Milligan's and he was guilty of some bizarre stuff. But let's give the, the benefit of the doubt.
