Sportspeople and Steroids
What percentage of professional sportspeople do you think are regularly on cycle to enhance their performance? Given that these dodgy pharmaceuticals constitute a multi-£billion business, and blockers are now more advanced than ever to the point that the latest crazy drug is ALWAYS undetectable, isn't it reasonable to assume that it's nigh on 100%?
I know a guy who used to work for a professional football club in this country. Not a big club, but League One/Two (I dunno which one they're in any more). Suffice it to say he is adamant that steroid use at particular times in the calendar was very high indeed.
The BBC ran a programme last night about drug use at the Seoul Olympics. I personally thought it was a little one-sided as it's fairly obvious that every 100m sprinter in recent memory is questionable. The curve of the 100m world record was starting to edge into an ever slighter downward gradient until the rise of steroids, whereupon it has suddenly jagged back downwards with guys shaving significant numbers of milliseconds off it.
And you can bet it's not down to hard work alone.
SPORTSPEOPLE ARE MOSTLY CHEATING C*NTS?

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
Well, it probably varies by sport, as does the advantage you can potentially gain (a lot more in pure speed, power and endurance sports than in games of skill).
There's a lot at stake as I think if Bolt were to be exposed as a cheat then athletics would be finished as a major global sport, and the status of the Olympics as a whole would decline with it. There's not been too many high profile names caught in athletics recently, unlike cycling, but although positive tests bring bad publicity do they at least show the problem is being tackled? Times in the big Tour de France climbs have declined from the "not humanly possible" levels of a decade or so ago, although it's clear doping still goes on.
The interesting thing about the Ben Johnson case is that the drug he was caught taking was not the (then undetectable) one he was systematically using, but a very detectable steroid that you'd have to have been pretty stupid to use. It's likely the actual failed test in Seoul was down to a spiked drink, but if it hadn't been for that he might have got away with it for a good while longer!

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
It's difficult to say... I mean the science of training, physiotherapy etc has become so advanced.. through trial and error, there's generally accepted standards of achieving physical goals that must simply be higher than in the 'previous day'. Allied to this, it's no secret that training is able to be more frequent than ever before because of the money they all earn, that they don't have to worry about income. If training's particularly costly, bills will be footed. Specialist training, throughout the world is now in the grasp of many professional sportsmen. But, I really don't know what goes on day in day out at a pro sports club, so I really can't judge.

It is farking sad though that whenever somebody does something a little special you immediately think "I wonder what she is on".

Beat-off Marathon record holder???
Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
eggsactly. I mean I can't imagine that anyone trains harder than me. But you still see people come out and leave my performance limit for dead. It can't be natural. Not even with tidy totty in borussia dortmund kit as motivation

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
True... but there're factors like 'ultimate fappability' to take into account. So hard to quantify.. I mean I bet even some Mormons got down to some marathon beats back in the 1700s. They'd probably wreck 10 of us.
Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
That is in interesting point you have raised. I would have thought the ready access to goats that mormons had in the 1700s would have diminished the requirement for fapping. Although, they could just have easilig been utilised as training aids.
But even they had their problems with illegal performance enhancing practices. Who can forget the Salem Schick trials

I'd have expected you needed to beat some longevity into that meat or the goats in question would probably turn a mangaroo down, sport.
As for performance enhancers, I expect they used powdered rhino cock, like any self-respecting 1700er..

First Olympic athlete to be disqualified for failing a drugs test was a Swedish modern pentathlete, who tested positive for the banned substance... alcohol!
Like any self-respecting pub pool or darts player, he opted for a few beers to calm the nerves before the shooting event!

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
Something about Tyson Gay's face made me think of steroids the other day. No idea though. He seems quite slim and I thought steroids caused the Maurice Greene type physique?
And hasn't Blake, the guy who's been beating Bolt regularly recently, already been caught on something once? He's a stocky young man...
I'd be devastated if it turned out Bolt is. I like this optional blood/urine submission thing they have in cycling (I think?) where athletes give samples for retrospective testing years after they have retired (under the assumption that the tests would have caught up with the chemists at this point). Would be good in all sports.
The other, controversial, view is that you should let athletes do what they want and see how far and fast the human body can go with the assistance of drugs. I don't subscribe to this theory.

They would be killing themselves left right and centre. That's exactly why drug tests were brought in in the first place. No parent would want their child to go into professional sport, sponsors and TV would bugger off en masse and all racing/power sports would become underground activities.Lara Lara Laughs wrote:The other, controversial, view is that you should let athletes do what they want and see how far and fast the human body can go with the assistance of drugs. The war against doping may never be won, but the day they give up the fight is the day sport as we know it ends.

The thing is, we're all indulging in the most wild speculation possible... we may as well say Basil Brush is taking steroids.

Plenty of chat on talkback today about the "wisdom" of using Ben Johnson to promote anything.

And that "chat" is exactly why it is wise to do.

Indeed. Sportsbet wins no matter what happens i.e. the ad stays, or it is withdrawn, SB still gets a free kick with the coverage either way. Quite shrewd.

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
Just saw the ad in question....new low, but not that much worse than the old low, and I'm about as likely to be a customer of Sportsbet as of Mr Johnson's chemist anyway so WGAF what the hell I think....All Publicity Is Good etc. Sportsbet ads are deliberately annoying, then annoyance becomes 'offence' somewhere between complaint and response to complaint and it becomes PCGM!!!! issue no 16783. Stuff them all to hell.

The worst sports betting agency ad involved the irritating offspring of Fairy Toilet Block* and her hubby the criminal Bill.

'Mrs W' has been code for gay in our family since about ten minutes after first hearing her name.
Before the Johnson effort, the one with Juddy was my all-time low....which had in turn knocked 'This Magic Moment' off the podium.

What's 'the one with Juddy' and what's 'this magic moment'? Not up with either.

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
'Juddy' was actually a TAB ad....hard to tell them apart. Gormless bogan git serenades the Judmeister lip-synching 'I Will Love You Always' (John Bon Jovi orig unless mistaken). Chris J looks thoroughly embarrassed, as he bloody well should.
'This Magic Moment' shows GBG in a bar practically having sex with his winning ticket, strutting around with incredibly smug, totally punchable expression, all to the tune of 'This Magic Moment' (could be the Drifters).
Bunnings should put them both on loop in their bucket aisle.

Cool if cringeworthy ads by TAB.
Mark Geyer, Greg Hall and a superhorse (that I can't quite remember the name of) are also subject of the ads.

Re: Sportspeople and Steroids
Well banning tobacco advertising (which had great farking ads) was supposed to kill sport and didn't, so maybe banning betting (which don't) would be a win/win.
That said I choked on my beer when the Johnson ad popped up.
