Great site that I use regularly ...................

But ...............................

It looks as though the grubs have decided to charge folk a small fortune to use it ................

WTF? Had a look. 50 pounds annually?

Block javascript on that site (available in browser settings) and it's all still visible.

This has caused a massive kerfuffle amongst the Association of Cricket Statisticians who pretty much set the site on in the first place.

There are very few people who could justify 50 quid per annum for some very niche information over and above cricinfo.

Sage. I tip the fee will either come down massively, or be dropped all together.

The site was bought by the publishers of The Cricketer magazine and they reckon it costs 100k quid a year to maintain. Hence the need for a fee.

Apparently* now that it has a paywall it actually runs much faster as it doesn't have ads all over it.

If CA had a decent sortable stats feature you can see that a keen amateur might pay for it. But it isn't even as good as Statsguru which itself is rubbish.

I like using it for first class cricket rather than tests. The in depth FC stats on each player are very good plus they list scorecards of every FC game a cricketer played. They also have truckloads of non first class matches. I even found a practice game my half-brother played for a South East Qld team against the South Australian Shield team back in the 70s.

Agree WW. The site doesn't really offer anything at Test level that Cricinfo and Howstat don't already provide, but their FC stats are fantastic.

I had started a couple of projects about six weeks ago (one involving the Sheffield Shield) but have been hamstrung by Cricket Archive's decision to put up the paywall. I'm able to do most of it using Cricinfo but needed CA for the finishing touches.

Honestly, just bypass it by disabling JavaScript on that website. It's not foolproof like The Times paywall.

Ha!

I'm on a mobile right now. Will send over a message when I get on a computer in a couple of hours. It's nothing too complex, generally in the settings tab in the browser.

Dr Google says:

How to turn off Javascript in Firefox?
Disabling JavaScript in Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox.
2. In the address bar, type about:config and press enter.
3. Click "I'll be careful, I promise!" on the next dialogue that comes up.
4. Find the preference named javascript.enabled. ...
5. Right-click on javascript.enabled and select "Toggle." ...
6. Close the about:config tab.

For Chrome:

1. Select the “Menu” Menu Button button located at the upper-right corner of the screen, then select “Settings“, or type “chrome://settings/content“ in the address bar, press “Enter“, then skip to step 3.
2. Scroll down and select the “Show advanced settings…” option.
3. Select the “Content settings…” button.
4. Select “Allow all sites to run JavaScript” to enable JavaScript, select “Do not allow any site to run JavaScript” to disable it.

For Internet Explorer:

1. Select the Gear in the upper-right corner of the screen or the “Tools” menu if you have the menu bar enabled, then select “Internet Options“.
2. Select the “Security” tab.
3. Select the zone you wish to modify. In most cases, it will be “Internet“.
4. Select the “Custom level…” button.
5. Scroll down to the “Scripting” area and select the radio button to “Enable” or “Disable” it “Active scripting“. You may also opt for IE11 to “Prompt” you to allow scripts to run.
6. Select “OK“, then “OK” again.

All covered in this article.

^that's about it. An added bonus is that ads won't run without script. Fleecers who don't pay volunteers for their services but want subscription fees don't really deserve it, IMO.

No worries at all.

Just going back to the blocking javascript. I'd recommend blacklisting the website in question for accessing it, as most sites are not remotely readable without javascript.

In chrome->
In the address bar type the following: chrome://settings/content
under javascript, keep the radio button as "Allow all sites to run JavaScript"
there's a manage exceptions button. Add the website in question and select block from the drop down menu.

For firefox, I'd recommend an add-on called noscript. Just blacklist the website in question.

IE: The gear icon in the top right-> Internet options ->Security Tab -> Restricted sites -> add the website in question.

Cheers, t. Excellent extra tip. I did think it would be pain to continually disable and re-enable javascript.

Very cool add-on. Just have to allow the site you are on if it is glitchy.

Cricket Archive is now accessible.
