Msg for poster (formerly?) known as "beamer"
beamer, you were wondering aloud about both your (formerly great) interest in cricket, and more specifically about your long-lasting chosen nickname.
I wouldn't agonise over the latter. However "over the top" it may appear at the minute, it was obviously always in jest.
To your name. I suppose you will get various suggestions if you do decide to change it - and not sign off
Here's one that came to me, mystically, on a magic cloud:
throughthegate (or thruthegate if you're not a spelling natsi)
1. nice general idea of taking a bold step forward
2. Test batsman goes out to bat, e.g. at TB
3. bingo! for a bowler
The grim event troubling cricket has reminded me of Graeme Fowler's - understandable - whinge, circa 1982, of the 4 West Indies quicks:
"I don't know why they even bother putting up two sets of stumps out there - no bugger's trying to hit them." (Or words very much to that effect.)
Larwood always claimed he never aimed higher than the chest, and the strategy was always to try to take wickets (not to "rough up" batsmen).
"throughthegate" would be one way of focussing a name back on basics of cricket. And might even in some way help to reignite your interest in all that's best about the game!
Anyway, best wishes in the confusion we're working through, or in.

Hopefully he'll be back. Got the impression he was getting a bit stressed out with it all but on the whole he was a good poster and contributor and he'll be missed if he doesn't come back.

I've not. But it's not like I'm prone to badges of honour.

Re: Msg for poster (formerly?) known as "beamer"
Yeah... just got to the stage where I'd had enough. The torrent of abuse being aimed at certain players (and not even indisputably crap ones) even when we were winning, it was ruining my enjoyment of the game. I lost it with three different people in a fairly short space of time, and the day we won the Ashes seemed like a symbolic moment to call it a day (the fact I was going abroad for a couple of months shortly afterwards made it easier to make a clean break).
I didn't even look in again for over a year. Seems a bit of a ghost town nowadays, even Dello appears to have jumped ship, it appears to be largely an Aussie forum these days. Not sure if I'll contribute regularly again but good to see they haven't (quite) completely turned out the lights yet...

Yay indeed! Good to see your post "in spite of everything" (and more), beamer.
I hope you will post again, from time to time, even if this is a ghost ship ... the Adnams can sometimes be good.
Best wishes to you in any case.

Hopefully the Ashes (if they're played!!!) will see the return of a few more English forumers.
Good to see even one post from the Beamer.
