WACA's Position on Outdoor Stadium Debate

12/12/2007

In view of the recent public debate on the proposed outdoor stadium it is timely to reiterate the position of the WACA Board.

The WACA represents 130 years of Western Australian history stretching back to the formative years of the colony in the 1880's. The proposed WACA Ground redevelopment gives the State the opportunity to have delivered to it at no cost to the taxpayer a dedicated 21st century world class cricket stadium.

Under the guidance of the Minister for Planning & Infrastructure and the East Perth Redevelopment Authority the WACA, in partnership with Ascot Capital Limited, has the opportunity to preserve this sporting icon as a feature of a multi-faceted commercial residential development forming a part of the exciting Riverside Project. It is not just about the WACA, it is about the Eastern Gateway to our city. The Board, in conjunction with our key stakeholders, is committed to this project.

In our view the proposed new stadium will be predominantly a football stadium. There is nothing wrong with that – our South Australian neighbors have Adelaide Oval and Football Park. There is likely to be short form games – an occasional Twenty20 versus say England or the 2015 World Cup – where it would make sense to play at a venue with a bigger capacity be it a new stadium or a revamped Subiaco Oval but for the majority of matches, a 30,000 redeveloped WACA Ground is the correct home for cricket. If the Government and football comes to terms we see a win/win for the Western Australian public with two 21st century stadiums, ours for 30,000 for cricket and the other at 60,000 for football and other codes as required.

There are many reasons for the Board's support of the WACA as opposed to the new stadium for the majority of matches, a view that has remained unchanged for the past three years:

· We can develop a dedicated first class facility for our members.

· We have no need to concern ourselves with drop-in pitches.

· A 30,000 model is more appropriate than a 60,000.

· It retains a green belt in the Riverside project rather than a sea of concrete.

· The financial modeling we have carried out shows that we would be significantly worse off, taking into account rental and other factors, were we to become a tenant of a new stadium.

· It is at no cost to WACA membership or the taxpayer.

· The independence of the WACA as the umbrella body for cricket in this State owning its own ground and with a solid income from the developments to sustain cricket for many years.

Joke decision. East Perth was by far the better site. The government should have told the WAFC to go ****** themselves.

According to Langoulant on radio last week... they build three quarters of the stadium by 2015 while still playing at Subi ...then they play at Kitchener and demolish Subi ...and then they finish the Kitchener stadium (because it overlaps the current oval) ...

This report says 2014 ...obviously Craps is trying to take the focus off Fong/McGinty by announcing this today and letting Alannah have a new train (to Bunbury) yesterday

What a disgraceful decision from the WA government. To even think they could demolish subi. Haven't they learned that the BCCI won't allow any damge to anything subi?
