There's a big factional split in the Mansells ... half of them won't talk to the other half. Care needs to be exercised at times, notably on Flinders Island.

So they're just like white people then. Ask Lachlan and the other one about Daddy's other family.

actually, I did once know another Ian Anderson, more usually nicknamed Ernie, way back in the late 1970's. Tasmanian. Possibility?

"we are family"
Can they set it aside for a common good. I can remember a very influential Aboriginal elder and a very senior member of the Liberal party during the Howard years tearing strips off each other daily in the press (and by that I mean either pistols or lawsuits at dawn) and then sharing a beer together and getting some serious business done. Personally I would have fed the latter to the crocs in the Alligator River but no "qmy that's just Territory politics mate".

That seems to fly in the face of the Guardian poll:
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/sep/05/most-voters-want-australia-day-to-stay-on-26-january-guardian-essential-poll
Both ABC & The Guardian are leftist mouthpieces. Who is right?
Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XIII)
Would need to look at the sample sizes and locations. Polls on attitudes are notoriously difficult.
I really think TGOs birthday, Xmas day, the start of Ramadan, commencement of Passover are all quality candidates. A personal favourite would be the day the seppos fled Vietnam while another would be 11/11, the day we remember the sacking of Whitlam*.
Actually have almost finished a small essay on the underside of Remembrance Day where we shd remember those here who fought conscription and participation in an absurd war.

I argued for May 9 higher in this thread, but I have also heard a strong argument for May 8 .... Ma-a-a-a-te.

I think there were several. However much though I approve of the solidarity and anti government sentiment, unfortunately much of the diggers' angst was driven by anti Chinese sentiment. This is somewhat ironic given the local Maoists have for near 50 years used the Southern Cross flag.
Peter Lalor who is a long distant and would be forgettable rello famously was shot, hidden and lost an arm*. He ended up a very conservative MP in the Vic Parliament.
*I have a key ring with a bright red enamel metal arm attached produced for the anniversary of the rebellion (made by a community artist mate).
While the Rebellion had some positive elements (eg an Italian radical) it was not great.
If rebellion is what we are after there are two others that could be considered - the birth of the eight hour day movement which I'd favour but few others would consider.
Another would be the date of one of the riots led by returning and disillusioned WW! soldiers. Some were put down by the cops. Oz was not a terribly nice place in them thar days.
The other which is more emblematic of this weird joint is the anniversary of the Rum Rebellion. That date seems most apt.

or March 19
"The first officially recognised Test match began on 15 March 1877 and ended on 19 March 1877 and was played between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where Australia won by 45 runs".
