"When I began playing in pubs, I was mixing with fortysomethings so I grew up quick. One thing that struck me was the number who worked hard and looked forward to fulfilling their retirement plans only to never reach that age – or to lose their health and not be able to fulfil their plans.
My philosophy is you've got to enjoy life while you can – there's not much point being the richest man in the graveyard. So long as you've got enough money to get by, why not spend the rest?"

He clearly enjoyed his fortune. RIP to the Crafty Cockney.
You would have gotten long odds on Steve Folkes dying of a heart attack at a younger age than Eric Bristow.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVIII/The Death Thread 2018
Not saying it's right but the mainstream TV media here in the UK
didn't give much coverage to the passing of Eric. He managed to get onto the scrolling newsfeed bar at the bottom of the screen but I didn't see any obit type video package.
Now for those of you overseas you may or may not have heard that relatively recently the outspoken Eric got into hot water in the football peadophile storm that broke in the last couple of years. He tweeted that ex-footballers who had now come forward to name their accuser of not being 'proper men' for not 'sorting out' the offender when they had become grown men and could presumably physically confront him. He got pilloried for it and kind of tried to justify his tweets with this:
"It makes me furious to think that an abuser can get away with it for so long, and to so many, when they should always be looking over their shoulder in fear, waiting to be confronted," he said.
"I know why I've been vilified but if one child comes forward quicker or one abuser thinks twice about the likelihood of being confronted then it will have been worth it."
So I believe BBC et al shied away from any obit as Bristow had become 'toxic' of sorts.
Not so shy about praising old Winnie though. Only implicated in murder, advocate of necklacing, convicted of fraud...
Not saying Eric was a saint and his comments on the peadophile topic were at best ill-judged and at worst very damaging to those abused but in the overall scheme of things he was a big cultural figure over here in the UK. Darts was mega TV in the 80s and he was the big character.
Less double top and more double standards?

Yet another illustration of the general public’s expectation that their sporting heroes be saintly geniuses capable of faultless and eloquent public performance; whilst their politicians are almost expected to be conniving, philandering, thieving scum.

Geez, Steve Folkes dropping dead at 59 on a bike was bad enough - but 23???!!!
Fark, I'll enjoy a merlot tonight on his behalf, and won't be going for a run or bike ride.

Yes. He was originally hired by Kubrick as a tech adviser but Kubrick was so impressed by his coaching of the extras in the film that he gave him the leading role. Much of his dialogue in the film is unscripted & impromptu.

RIP.
I used to love reading the stories about his fielding when I first got into cricket. I recall one author swearing blind that Bland's run outs of Barrington and then Parks at Lords in 1965 effectively won the series for Saf.

"God" life? Her god proved a destructive one. Her hubby and their spawn were disasters in their country and left a wake of destruction across the planet.
She seemed a jolly enough character in her own right.

Hehehe @ our respective battles with technology. Line ball toss(er) up between Rotten Ronny Raygun and Bush snr. The former prospered fom McCarthyism and the latter as CIA head during the murderousinterentions ahead of their White House days.
Of course the latter started the Iraq disaster and then his spawn became a war criminal with IW2.
The seppo media are wetting themselves over Queen Barbie.
