Re: England v Pakistan, 1st Test, Lord’s, 24-28 May, 2018
Saw one slightly tongue in cheek comment on BBC that “before long, teams will be playing a warm-up Test with England ahead of their main series with Ireland”. Seriously though I’m glad we didn’t step up to the plate as Ireland’s first Test opponents, as they would in all probability have rolled us over in Dublin.
It’s so hard to turn around a losing culture once it seeps in, the 80s and 90s Test sides and more recent 20 years of one-day failings show that. Now it’s turned on its head regarding the two formats, which is why I’m starting to think an Irishman might be the best answer... I know he doesn’t really play FC county cricket any more but then neither does Buttler. So, Morgan as a specialist captain batting at 7 or 8 anyone?

I have always rated Morgan highly (a slight bias being a Sexy supporter aside).
He is the most unflappable and thoughtful player and Captain that I have ever come across since Brearley (in Test cricket).
Astute and observant, he studies his opponents pros and cons and has the knack of knowing which bowler to bowl and at what time.
Sadly, he has never shaken off the "excellent one day player" tag attached to him since 2015 … perhaps a legacy of Johann's thinking coupled to the ECB's blind avoidance of having a single captain for all formats.

If re-qualification rules were format-specific, he could captain Ireland in Tests and England in JAMODIs

Stokes plays a village cricket shot and we’re 5 down.
Just Buttler and the 90s-style tail to come, this will be over today.

Not looking great for England.
Three of Ed Smith's hunches unravelled. Two to go. Though Bess might not get another chance (to bowl) this match.

And there goes probably the last chance of even making them bat again.
Buttler and the tail might as well just have a slog here, give the crowd a bit of entertainment. I hope the Lord’s crowd aren’t too polite to boo at the presentation. They certainly won’t be at Headingley, that’s for sure... has to be a few changes in order.

Great stand between Buttler and Bess. I sat down in a pub in Clacton just as Root was dismissed to make the score 6-110.

A pair for Sturat. No real surprise there, though it was quaint he was out lbw in the first dig. Most unusual for him to try and get behind the ball these days.

A 9 wicket win is a not too shabby effort from the rebuilding Stannies,

They have to send him a message and bat him (Broad) at 11 next time around.
First time we’ve lost the opening home Test of the season since 1995 apparently When Robson and Jerome were number one, as said fact continues... remember them? Bronn from Game of Thrones and... the other one. Kept Oasis and Pulp classics off number one with their cheesy crooner re-hashes back in the day!

Yeah, they’ve both been in plenty of things. Making sure their music careers are firmly forgotten I guess!taipan wrote:beamer wrote:They have to send him a message and bat him (Broad) at 11 next time around.

How often do you see that? A big stand reaches the end of the day, then it all goes to poo-poo quickly next morning.
Still, congrat to the Wackies.

Suspected nothing would have changed when the England squad was announced.
When they started talking up their batting line-up as now being "exciting" with the addition of a specialist number seven, it was clear nothing had been learned over the winter. Not a thing. I don't believe a single person ever suggested that the problem with England's feeble batting line-up was that it lacked pizazz. Runs, yes. Technical aptitude, for sure. An ability to play pace bowling, short bowling, pitched up bowling, swing bowling, reverse swing bowling and spin, most certainly.
If the best and brightest minds of English cricket can only come up with "let's get a white-ball hacker into the side" as a solution to their multitude of inadequacies, then we're truly f*cked for ever more.
Well played, Pakistan. Talent and desire beats self-regarding complacency every time.

And the sweet cherry on top of this turdcake is three England players being accused of spot-fixing in India two winters ago.
This match: http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/10732/scorecard/1034817/india-vs-england-5th-test-england-tour-of-india-2016-17/
God, what a horror show that game was - scored 477 batting first, lost by an innings.
Root and Bayliss think the allegations are "outrageous". The idea that any of our players could competently accomplish anything to order may well be outrageous. But that doesn't mean they didn't try.
Hope they all get the Amir treatment if they did.

It sounds dubious ... bookmakers don't have to pay foreign batsmen to fail in India, and they can't be banked upon to succeed.
