Top five in said list by average are Marshall, Garner, Ambrose, Philander and Trueman. Some company for the Yarpster medium-pacer to be in
When Bung Lee reached 300 he had the worst average of that club.

There was almost no variety of opposition and conditions either, just Australia and the Dog and Duck XI to play. No short formats to switch mindsets between. No whistle stop tours where you step off the plane (ship?) just in time for the toss in the first Test.
Would be interesting to analyse the careers of some of these older players with outstanding stats, to see if their averages are down to consistency or to a few very large scores skewing them. It’s often been speculated what Bradman would have averaged had he played a modern day career of 150 Tests in 10 different countries, but equally interesting question for other pre-war or even pre-‘60s players. I’m sure someone has run a simulation to “prove” the answer...

Steady but a little ponderous from England.

Wasn’t Bradman good at ducking overseas tours?

Were there any opponents other than England in his day? Maybe a weak early South African side...

Yeah he ducked the SA tour and I think an Indian one. SA weren’t that strong then but had a couple of useful bats

Root the fastest to 6000 Test runs time-wise, though slightly older than Tendulkar and Cook were on reaching that milestone.
Malan unlucky there, double umpire’s call doesn’t overrule an out call on the field! Important spell for England now, need to avoid the middle order collapse and a big one is required from the captain.

It was only the SA one that he missed (if you exclude the one off Test in NZ after the war).
Given he had averaged over 200 against SAf a couple of seasons earlier at home, you would have to think that he left a few runs on that table in missing that series.

Yeah, checked the stats now. Australia's only away tour, apart from England, was against SA. So doesn't really answer Beams query.

So Root stupidly runs himself out

And sets off a collapse. 210-3 we were well on top, and presumably bowled out for less than 300 the game is effectively lost. The weather forecast is set for India to rack up 600 over the next two days.taipan wrote:So Root stupidly runs himself out
Run out was probably Bairstow’s fault really, then a run of strange wickets to follow it.

If Root can maintain that average and improve (though he's no slouch) ahainst oz, a post career assessment might see him justifiably in an AT Eng XI.

Needs to take a leaf from the selfish Ksnr to ensure it is his partner who is run out.
A meh day for Pomgolia in the field. The Bannies stuck to their task tho Stiffy Panderer leaked a few ...
Runs.

From 3-216 the Wackies will be delighted to have England 9-285 at Stumps.
Advantage India at this stage one would think.

Having now watched the highlights, the Root run out certainly turned the innings on its head. Root and Bairstow were cruising.

I'd say it was sub par from England with the advantage up in the air.

Surely it is time to sack Bumble for being an ignorant tool. In one breath criticises Instant for being the bowler with 200 wickets as having the worst average then in the next downplays Ashtray for taking most of his wickets in the subi con. if Jimmeh played for the Bannies doubt he'd have 200 wickets.
Bumble is a parody.

Terrible catching in the slips. Two drops in two balls.
