Anyone seen any good movies recently?

Post by LeFromage on Fri 25 Jan 2008, 19:41

I've been on a bit of a movie-watching roll of late, but everything I've seen thus far has been crap (Transformers, Superbad, Juno, Napoleon Dynamite, Knocked Up).

What should I be looking out for?

Hmm would have to wholeheartedly disagree about Napoleon Dynamite. Transformers was a visual orgasm of CGI.

Watched 3.10 to Yuma the other week, was damn good.

I've got some recommendations for you Jay.

No country for old men
The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
Eastern Promises
I'm not there (if you're into Dylan)

I have only seen the first of those four but the rest have been highly recommended by friends.

Seen Across the Universe and No Country for Old Men recently. The first one was good IMHO, the second one was quite brilliant, with a powerhouse performance by Bardem.

Into the Wild is supposed to be excellent too. Might be a bit worthy with Sean Penn directing though.

A visual orgasm of CGI wrapped up in the most knuckle-headedly dumb and often nonsensical film-making this side of the last time Michael Bay was allowed crapify a movie.

Not that I was expecting much from Transformers, but I didn't think it would be that badly put together.

Meh.

Well what did you expect? The TV series was for children and the Transformer characters were basically human... that would've been ridiculous.

I thought it was predictable, wannabe-hip, wannabe-indie tosh, replete with 'alternative' two-chord acoustic guitar soundtrack and quotable catch-phrases.

Felt like a cynical, inauthentic indie-movie-by-numbers.

Wasn't as crap as the other movies I mentioned, but I didn't think much of it all the same.

Like I said, I wasn't expecting much. But I was expecting the basics of film-making and plotting to be represented in some way.

For example, the better part of the movie is spent following the two factions as they race to find a map Megatron made to the 'Allspark'. Naturally, we later find out that the Allspark was moved by the humans AFTER the map was made, to a place specifically selected to prevent the transformers from finding it. But does that stop them from using the now invalid map to find it? Nope. The map leads them right to it. Somehow.

So now the Allspark is found, but entrusted to Bumblebee. And what does a US special forces operative decide to do? That's right - drive it into the middle of a large city, where hundreds, if not thousands of people can be killed in the inevitable battle between 20 foot tall transforming robots.

There was even a subplot where Shia LeBeouf's love interest was discovered to have a criminal record, but that whole issue was handily resolved five minutes later when he cuts a deal with the government. Brilliant. That's five minutes of my life I'll never get back. What was the point of that?

What was the point of any of it, other than to showcase what neat stuff they can do with CGI and explosions these days?

Sweeney Todd was ok if you're into that sort of thing.

Which I'm not - except I was made to hunt down a dodgy internet link for it and there was nothing else on TV.

It's worth it for the comedy value alone of seeing Helena Bonham carters jugs expand and deflate depending on the scene and what time they filmed it while she was pregnant.

Thats from what I could see of course because the link I saw was worse than a 1920's black & white silent movie.

Or

Bridge On The River Kwai
Creepshow [That cockroach episode is the creepiest I have ever seen]
Mortal Kombat
Bitter Moon
Shawshank Redemption
Dreamship Surprise [Best parody movie ever]
Kung Pao [Second Best parody movie ever]
Shaolin Soccer

I recommend some absolutely great John Woo Hong Kong action flicks like [Good style, narrative and action]
The Killer
Hard Boil
A Better Tomorrow

Unfortunately, I don't like too many of the recent flicks either. All CG and no content. They all start looking the same and as much cheesy...

I got into some non-english films a while back. There's a Brazilian film I can't remember the name of, where there were 4 seperate storylines and they all ended up on screen at the same time in one point of the film. Very clever, been done a million times since though.

Yeah, can't remember the name. Lot of help I am...
