Indian surnames and where they are from
Just looking at the Ranji scores, I notice that the Mumbai team has a lot of players with names ending in 'kar', whilst the Gujarat team has a lot of Patels. The Karnataka team has numerous players who's names end in 'appa', whilst more understandably, the Punjab team is full of Singh's.
Can any Indian forummers please explain the history behind these trends?

Re: Indian surnames and where they are from
'kar' means 'to do'. so probably put at the end of professions. its extremely common amongst maharashtrians
dont ask me what 'tendul' or 'gavas' mean
patel was the title given to a land-owner in medieval times. its variation in maharashtra is patil. also common throughout india
appa, no idea
singh of course means lion. used at the end of all sikh names

Re: Indian surnames and where they are from
Ganguly, Chatterjee, Basu, Nandi, Bose etc. are common Bengali surnames.
"Appa" I believe means "father".
I believe that many from the South don't carry surnames. Since many a surname tended to represent a caste, as part of the drive to shet the caste based society surnames were dropped. Istead the father's first name gets tagged in place.
For e.g. in the case of this new opener Murali Vijay. One of those names is his first name and the other the first name of his father. Not sure which one is which.
