Now that you mention it maybe it's not too late to try some of those Enid Blytons?

He mentioned Northampton's, nay, Spring Borough's finest. He's in my good books.

I read Ranji by Simon Wilde recently and have a few history books which never finish.

The only fiction I can understand is Roald Dahl's children's books and Captain underpants, which is more to my literary capacity.

I look forward to collecting Ray Bradbury and O' Henry short stories. Just loved them in college. Amazing pearls those.

Shantaram is damn good. I haven't gotten my hands on Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and Satanic Verses yet due to the shameful banning in India in backdrop of Muslim hardliners dictating terms to democratic Govts. can anyone tell me how they are? Might have to download from net and read since I doubt I will get hard copies here easily.

Savages - Don Winslow.

As for Shantaram - modern fiction writing doesn't get much better than it. I have recommended it to three of my friends and none of them could get enough of it.

Re-reading Tiger Men by Barry Petersen. Its an autobiographical account of regular Aust army Captain, Petersens secondment to the CIA during the Vietnam war to organize the Montagnard tribes against the Vietcong.
I'm suprised a movie has never been made. Its real 'Hollywood' stuff & all the more incredible because its all true.

These days I just buy bestsellers from the streets [paperbacks in good condition but second hand]. Very cheap buys for invaluable reading! Not much Libraries left in Mumbai anymore. The sad part is the current generation of kids is all onto computers and phones but not into reading. Libraries have mostly shut down.

I have bought a ton of second hand Enid Blyton books from libraries shutting shop to read to my kid and develop her reading habits. Also benefits my siblings kids who come over for holidays.

Don't buy many books these days. kindle is a better option.

For 30 to 50 bucks per book [half to one dollar], I can't complain much about buying good books.

Yeah. But it has fantastic stories that still have innocence and good proper English. I think most of them have been edited to be politically correct and unoffensive now for modern times. Recently my sister borrowed my Faraway Tree series to read to her kids and ended up reading and getting spellbound herself. She couldn't stop raving about it. Those books still have tremendous power of imagination for kids. I wouldn't like the family kids to be introduced to the dark violent Harry Potter world just yet!

I read the Godfather book a long time after watching the movie. Had watched the movie several times by that. As good as the first movie is, the book is even better. Puzo has a way of creating characters which are so real and interesting. There is quite a bit in the story which never made it to the movie, though that is to be expected.
