Thousands of Games volunteers quit: report
    Posted September 30, 2010 10:41:00

Indian press reports say up to 10,000 of the 22,000 Commonwealth Games volunteers have quit, just three days before the event starts.

The Times of India newspaper says volunteers have walked away because of poor training and motivation, unglamorous assignments, and random allocation of responsibilities.

Unnamed officials have told the paper that some volunteers have left without returning their free Games uniforms.

The situation has led to private parties having to step up their contribution to the volunteer efforts.

"We are doing all that has been asked of us," said Abhijit Sarkar, spokesperson for Sahara group, which has provided volunteers at Indira Gandhi airport and the athletes village.

An official associated with the volunteer program claimed that all of the volunteers had turned up at the athletes village, even though there have been complaints of no-shows.

The paper says there is now concern over how the event's logistics will be affected by the lack of volunteers.

why? the courts are not supposed to deliver judgements based on what's happening with some other unrelated event somewhere else. after this it will be the bihar elections, then some other state elections, then the cricket world cup

its been long enough. time for the ayodhya judgement already. another 2 hours now

It was much more than nice. The suprising aspect to me was the precise time keeping and coordination across so may things / people that went on. This is something that has never been India's forte. All in all it was quite terrific. The Pakistani contingent was welcomed with open arms which was also good to see.

Anywho, congrats to the New Delhians for pulling off the Opening Ceremony without any major mishaps. Well done them, and hopefully not too many more unfavourable headlines for the coming 10 days or so.

Apparently most of the negative comments about the OC were from the indian Press. Not so much negative but more along the lines of, "Holy Crap we didn't screw it up". Which could've been better left for a drinks session at the bar of the Press Club.
