Re: The Commonwealth Games
beamer wrote:Shows how weak our athletics is really, if we’re losing to the Aussies... global medal prospects for the next few years look thin on the ground. We’ve had a golden era in a way this decade, but it was always lacking in medal winning depth behind Mo, Jess and Greg. The squad’s basically full of borderline finalists who might get a 4th or 5th place if they produce their absolute best.skully wrote:lardbucket wrote:Not being negative, just realistic. Not a lot of competition in many of the sports, and we have a home advantage. We've done well and here's lots of PBs, but let's not get carried away; most of the Gold medal winners, barring a few of the swimmers, would not have made an Olympic or WC final.
We are only beating those we're up against, when we beat them, because we're not up against much.
I guess the point I was trying to make was our significant improvement in T&F. Historically Aus has done very well in the Comm Games swimming and cycling, lead the medal count and then been swamped by the UK in the T&F, not to necessarily top the medal count but certainly to get closer to Aus.
I'm pleased we have won a bag of T&F gold.
I reserve the right to get excited at the Golds by the likes of Starc, Marschall, Crombie and Davies, as it's often a Pom or some South Pacific Island giant taking these events at the Comm Games.
If you prefer to "meh" I maintain that's negative.
Only the relays saved us from an embarrassing home World Championship showing last year. The first medal-free major event for UK athletics might not be too far off.
You are forgetting that your athletes are competing as four different countries instead of team GB as they do at the Olympics so your winning potential is greatly diminished whereas our potential won't get any better.
Re: The Commonwealth Games
Why is our winning potential diminished by competing as four countries (other than obviously in relays)? It just means we can potentially have more British athletes entered in each individual event.

And the Opals play England for Gold in the Women's BB. They beat England by 60 points in the pool matches.

Not just diving, some of the women long jumpers were so clad, I was left wondering whether skimpy underwear was the new sporting look.
Not that I'm complaining, I'll have you know.

Another sport I don't normally follow.
But friends, I was mesmerised by the movement of one Eilidh Simpson when I happened on the last two quarters of the England semi-final vs Canada today.
Another example of the internationalism of modern professional sport. Born in Waverley and childhood in Oz, Scottish mother (hence the very Scottish first name) and frequent trips to Scotland, sudden move to one of the wrong-tracks areas of NYC, then played for a couple of years in Spain before (currently) Cardiff. So how come England, I don't know.
But she chases around the court like a demon - stooped (a bit like J Bairstow) as if for extra speed, she is not built like a typical basketballer at all, and her crouched scuttling makes her look even shorter. But mercurial, inspirational, and great shooting. And the mop of thick black hair flying in all directions makes her presence even more memorable.
Watch the flying black hairmop!
The result (and quality of play) by the England squad vs Canada was a shock, reversing a big defeat in the pool games.
Of course Oz will marmalise England Women again in the final. But a laudable achievement by Simpson and the team around her, even to reach the final.

Theskimpy costumesathleticism in the womens beach volleyball was quite extraordinary as well.

Re: The Commonwealth Games
“Amateur” boxing is pretty boring when you can’t see the scores, in some form or other, as it progresses. Why did they scrap that? Three-round contests just aren’t compelling with the “pro” scoring method in operation. Over such a short contest you need to get a picture of who is winning.

Hey-ho, the expected burial, And SImpson anonymous, no spark, as if overawed.
Still, an unexpected silver medal for the team in red.
Man, are Aussie commentators biased, borderline sycophantic?! "It must be a great honour even to be part of this highly talented team" - *boak*

Confusing as crap, for the viewer... as is the fixed red/blue convention in the boxing.
