Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Looks like Wimbledon is going to be cancelled this year. It's not out of the question that we don't see Federer again.

Tennis could do with some new blood.
Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
That was my first thought. Well actually when thinking about the top players it was actually "good riddance" in some cases.

Some of the aging stars may find that their bodies "freshen up" without the constant slog of tennis and it prolongs their careers

Well lockdown in a private compound with hot and cold running personal trainers and nutritionists might limit the effects of isolation. Then again some of them might step outside after a year off and say "screw this", Life's too short.

Yeah, that's a possibility as well I guess. But they also thrive on competition and not having it for the best part of a year could well blunt their edge.

Saw footage of Serena in recent "training". She looked fat, so maybe she's already made the decision to enjoy life instead of the tennis circuit.

One mercy of Covid - no screaming, grunting women tennis players.

Only way Djokovic doesn’t win is due to injury or Covid.
Many of the younger players will have hardly played on grass… Federer probably still a strong favourite to be losing finalist even as a nearly 40-year-old part-timer.

On Gem. Did'nt see that.
Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
I always had the feeling he would get two or three years of absolute dominance due to being the last man standing of the golden generation, and distance himself from the others in terms of aggregate titles.JGK wrote:beamer wrote:Only way Djokovic doesn’t win is due to injury or Covid.

The gap to others is perhaps closing a bit but the younger players will need to be massively physically superior to topple him as they’re just so mentally weak. You’d back Djokovic from two sets and a break down against most opponents. One well-timed injury time-out and the tide is turned…

Murray beaten in straight sets by Shapovalov after battling through a couple of rounds. Couldn’t expect a lot more from him really, and I suspect he will be back.
Shapovalov looks to have quite some potential, though not the consistency to trouble someone like Djokovic just yet.

This will be the easiest Grand Slam of Joker's career.
Meanwhile, well done (in advance) for Ash Barty coming second.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Might have a few easy ones over the next couple of years if Federer and possibly Nadal are pretty much done. Father Time seems his only real opponent at the moment, and it appears he’s yet to take a set off him even at 34.JGK wrote:This will be the easiest Grand Slam of Joker's career.
