Do India need Tendulkar in their ODI side anymore?
On the evidence so far- No.
Without Tendulkar and under Dhoni's leadership, India have won a series in Sri Lanka away, and are well on their way to winning another series against England at home. Sachin remains a fine player in all forms of cricket, but in order to prolong his test career, I think that he should retire from the one day game. India just don't need him so much in this form of the game anymore, so he can retire safe in the knowledge that India's ODI team is in fine hands.

he wants to play the world cup i reckon.
but i agree, he isn't really required. if he does play, it shouldnt be as opener as gambhir-sehwag have a good thing going.

If he does play, he must play as an opener. I think he is the best ODI opener in the history of the game. The last time he opened in ODIs, he won us back to back finals against Australia in Australia.
But I think will now save himself more for test matches. But he wont let his one day practice go......Srikanth wants him to win the 2011 WC.

Re: Do India need Tendulkar in their ODI side anymore?
I had posted this is another forum:
"I personally feel Sachin should give up ODI cricket and concentrate on his test career. I don't see him playing till 2011 World Cup, and frankly India doesn't miss him in ODIs (lets be honest, most of the ODIs are quite meaningless). He has acheived pretty much everything in ODIs (bar winning a WC).
Sachin is not as fit as before,, and one slightly prolonged stretch of bad form (even in ODIs),, and everybody will be on his back for retirement.
I'd like him to concentrate and enjoy his test cricket for as long as possible, and aim for 15,000 runs and 50 centuries."

Do you get an e-mail alert whenever Tendulkar is mentioned here, Josh?

Re: Do India need Tendulkar in their ODI side anymore?
he should not play in the more meaningless series like this one, it can be used as an opportunity to blood some youngsters and see their potential for test cricket
when he is fit and playing odis he is still india's most skillful player and will be a huge asset if india want to win big tournaments against big teams. the indian team has not won a single multi-team tournament since 1990 without tendulkar in the team, and only once without a major contribution from him (2002 natwest)
in tournament finals india has won he averages 99.90 with 5 100s and 5 50s

Is there a way you can tell me how many tournaments PAK have won since the defeat to IND in the 1985 world series thing in AUS?....
thanks in advance

Re: Do India need Tendulkar in their ODI side anymore?
I have been advocating for 2 years now for SRT to give up ODIs and focus on the test magic. I don't see the sense in playing and getting injured in mindless T20s like IPL either.
There is no harm in letting him play important ODI series like say in Aus, NZ or SA, selectively where his experience could guide youngsters on difficult fast paced wickets, if he insists on playing but shouldn't be wasting his energies playing crap matches in the sub-continent merely with an eye on teh records.

He's already broken all the ODI batting records and even if he retired now he'll still hold all of the records for many years to come.

probably forever with the way things are shaping up
his only real motivation to play is obviously 2011, cant think of any other reason to keep playing odis. he desperately wants to be in a world-cup winning team and that will be his last chance. world cup at home with final in bombay. too tempting

Someone alluded to this somewhere about LLL, that he always pops up whenever Frank Lampard is mentioned. Sexual healing.

Indeed, and therefore punter was right to lose the series but ensure he wasn't banned for a test . . .

As and when he's available, he still makes the team a lot stronger than it is without him. And against the sides that are going to push us, that bit extra that Tendulkar provides may make the difference.

Re: Do India need Tendulkar in their ODI side anymore?
Its bordering on senseless to suggest that Tendulkar adds nothing to the ODI team.
Just because we've some super FTBs in the team atm doesn't mean Tendulkar's isn't required in the team. We all saw his importance in the CB series finals.
