Looks interesting. Might have a look in Amazon.

As River Phoenix once said, I'll have one of those.
I also like Mercer's quote: 'tradition is a wonderful friend but a dangerous enemy'.

Some interesting views on English (MCC) selection policies. Chaotic to say the least, mostly caused by the gentleman/player divide. Touches on politics, throwing etc. the throwing/dragging controversies show why the back foot rule was a bad idea. If only we can get rid of the chuckers.

Re: Cricket books
I'm hardly an avid reader, so takes a lot before a purchase of a book. After a few weeks, I've narrowed down to one of these four books to purchase
champions band (England's first overseas tour)
unquiet ones (Pakistan)
the strangers who came home (Australia's tour of England 1878)
field of shadows (a match played in wartime Germany, not quite convinced by this tbh)
Anyone here read any of them? Good enough to buy?

Another good read is a book which gives a history of the English selection process. The points mentioned above feature heavily. Can't find it, forgotten it's name, Wiki no help.

"Sins of Omission". From memory it's not particularly well written (if you're a literary snob) but it does have some fascinating insights into the actual selection processes of MCC home selections.

Thanks, but doesn't seem to be available as an ebook.

See the afore mentioned literary snob remark. Must have had a brain snap, I actually know (knew) the author.

There would have to be six volumes at least, with one of them devoted to the shenanigans around the side picked to go to South Africa in 68/69.

Re: Cricket books
ALan Butcher's new book about his time as Zimbabwe coach has been a pretty decent read.
Lays into some of the 90s players who went into ZC management, particularly Alistair Campbell, and absolutely lays into Kevin Curran hinting that he used the Zimbabwe team for his Mashonaland franchise. Seems like those two didn't see eye to eye. Unsurprisingly, has a bit of love for Utseya and Mpofu.
And he's a magnet for drama when driving a car.
Not bad for a modern cricket autobiography.

Is that a Zimbo cricketer or an acronym for something non-family-friendly?

I wouldn't mind ****** a fuomp. Best chance of scoring one these days....
But Mpofu's a somewhat fast-ish bowler.

So has anyone read Jonathan Trott's autobiography? Just hearing them on Back Page talk about his thoughts on facing Mitchell Johnson in "that" Ashes series.

No, but after seeing the parts about him laying into Vaughan, I'm buying one.

Re: Cricket books
Very little bad blood between him and Johnson. In fact, he seemed quite respectful of his comeback from the 2010/11 version that got stick from the crowd. Not quite the case with Warner, but Warner's a ****** if ever there was one. Decent book, and burns no bridges apart from laying into Vaughan and the Telegraph.
