Not sure how I missed Timmy Thomas’s departure.
His greatest hit has rarely been more topical.

To be fair, many of us missed his arrival.

Hehehe.
I'm not that far away from lardy's vintage and I confess I had not heard of Timmy.
That is bound to draw a "philistine!!" from lardy.

You surely do know the song, and the message, which is brilliant. RIP.

Was top 3 in 1973 ... before your time JGK, but perhaps you might have been aware of covers by Iggy, Sade, or those modern 'stars' Drake and MC Hammer. I didn't expect you to know about his music, skulIy, I know you're more a Robbie Williams and Taylor Swift sort of man.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
You were way more of a student of music at a tender age than I, piefellow. I really didn't start listening to music until around 1975, when along came Countdown on the ABC.
I have a vague recollection of songs like "In the summertime", "Bad, bad Leroy Brown", "Rock on" and some Elton songs (of course some Beatles magic from my very young days stuck in my head) but was more interested in playing sport than listening to music in my early teens .
Taylor Swift is a bit harsh (with deference to Nath), but, yeah I don't mind me some Robbie Williams.
And, sorry, not aware of the covers you mention. Might check it out but.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
I recall being enthralled very early on (pre-1970) by short music segments on GTK, Lobby Lloyde and the Coloured Balls, Billy Thorpe, The Easy Beats, the Beatles of course including the cartoon show, ,Deep Purple, lots of Creedence, and loud Janis Joplin as far back as 1968 when introduced to her by the older sister of a school friend. I also recall despising Johnny Farnham and turning him off some early music shows, just thought it was shit. A mate and I would peruse the too 40 every week - I'd go to town to get it - we were both quite obsessed, wanting to know who was producing all the different songs we listened to every lunch hour. Can still remember listening to Montego Bay one lunch hour in grade 5 or 6 and being intrigued by the rhythm.

As I said, way more of a music student than I. I never saw GTK, though became aware of it via much later clips of some renowned Aus rockers.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
I occasionally saw GTK and read Go-Set in the local milk bar (may have bought it once - the week the Beatles broke up), and followed the Top 40 and listened to the Kasey US Top 40 most Sunday mornings. Then in early 73 we cleared off to England for two and a half years. I had fancied myself as a bit of a musical expert - a week in UK at my new school listening to all the locals rave about a bloke I had never heard of (David Bowie), and I realised I wasn't.
Their hit parade was generally 3-6 months ahead of ours, and Timmy T's song was one of those that I never got to hear because it had been and gone over there and was yet to be released over here.

Seeing Bowie doing Space Oddity on GTK of a similar short program was definitely a 'wow' moment.

Weird - I listened to a lot of Sade in my time but that song seems to have snuck by me. Still, I enjoyed watching her singing it at Montreaux in 1984 on YT just now.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
I was an avid GTK follower as well. Spectrum, Chain, Max Merritt and the Meteors and other good local acts got a run.
The anti conscription movement also ran a pirate radio station that also ran a bit of music.
Around that time ABC late night radio would run 'avante garde ' music. I have a clear memory of being in a car and hearing King Crimson for the first time on the ABC. I know I also heard Julie Driscoll for the first time.
I still love the wireless.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
Apparently there is still footage of many of the GTK acts, not masters, but video transcribed from film. Some of it is on Ewetube ... Spectrum, La-De-Das, Daddy Cool, Max Merritt,, etc. Some international content but mostly local. Ewetube is a treasure trove of music.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXXII/The Death Thread 2022
Ewetyoob is a treasure trove, full stop.
With TV being ruined by excess reality TV, I spend much of my evenings on YT. I generally happen upon an interesting topic by chance then watch numerous related clips into the wee small hours.
I like spacey (not Kevin) stuff but often chortle away to numerous amusing clips. Got tied up last night on a theme of Tiktok fart clips. Spat shiraz at the screen more than once. Yeah, low brow, I know.
Recently have enjoyed much feedback on the idiocy of Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Peter Bowles, plummy actor, later in life played caricature often caddish characters eg .Richard de Vere and Guthrie Featherstone (Rumpole). Omnipresent in British TV shows for decades.

Growing up in Darwin in the 70s and early 80s, BBC sitcoms were a staple. I remember him well from To the Manor Born.

He also acted in Bellbird. Achilles played for a then-mythical Crows outfit IIRC. Allegedly kicked 90 metre goal, having practised as a kid kicking it over wheat silos ... shades of Billy Brainless.
