England v New Zealand, 2nd Test, Edgbaston, 10-14 June, 2021
So with Ollie banned for his dodgy tweets as a teenager (8 years ago - he was an idiot Yorkie kid FFS), who comes in?

Possibly, but that leaves Wood batting 8, as I pointed out before (given Leach is the only real candidate).JGK wrote:A spinner?
They might rotate the seamers anyway. Not sure if any of the IPL players are ready to return.

That Kane Richardson fella needs to put some serious runs on the board before his team meet India, or he might as well go back to seam bowling for Australia.

Bess added to the squad. Is there really nobody else?

Sounds like Bess is only cover for Leach. My concern is that they might be tempted to pick him for his batting if they don’t have a viable number 8 otherwise.

A second unnamed player is now being investigated for a tweet he made as a sixteen year old. Ridiculous state of affairs to punish people for things they said as immature teenagers. If they keep digging, who else will they dig up? This latest wokeness is pathetic.

I wonder if Shane Warne ever said anything ridiculous as an 18 year old.
If not, he has more than made up for it since.
Memories - ‘DHBS’ was not flattering.

Being “anti-woke” is just a socially acceptable way to say you’re (at the very least) tolerant of racism and discrimination.
If it turned out that a player had murdered someone when he was 16, would you say “he’s grown up, he’s a different person now”?

Anyway, a cricket forum perhaps isn’t the best place to fight the culture war, it could easily destroy what little remains of this place. So, back to the match...

You don’t have to be “anti-woke” to know that it’s moronic to censure a 25 year old for something he said at age 16, and has already apologised for.

OK, let’s carry on hammering the final nails into FB with a political argument then, you’ve convinced me.
Not sure if you’re referring to the Tommy Robinson one or the apparently unnamed second player. Michael Carberry says he wouldn’t want to play alongside Robinson, and that’s the sort of thing that matters.
Let’s see what the official punishment is, anyway, rather than the pre-emptive suspension, before judging. Nobody’s banned anyone for life over this, and it’s unlikely that will be the outcome.

A Prime Minister of Australia was excused of probable corruption by their side of politics because they were "young and naive" ... even though they were in their late 20's and partner in a law firm at the time of the acts

Going back to cricketing matters... Jimmy Anderson becomes England’s all-time most capped Test player, assuming he plays, overtaking Alastair Cook with his 162nd cap. Some going for a pace bowler, and by the winter he could be second only to Tendulkar worldwide.
He also needs four wickets to surpass Kumble in third place on the all-time list. It’s a little over 18 years since he made his debut, facing Zimbabwe alongside such names from the distant past as Alec Stewart, Nasser Hussain and Mark Butcher (all gone even before the MBEs were handed out!)

If you fight the 'culture war' anywhere else, a bar for instance, you'll bore the other patrons into the next bar in ten seconds flat. That option is not quite so available to the captive audience the SBM so generously provides.

And a current state Premier was excused for her probable corruption because she was a love sick 50 year old.

You won’t bore them, they’ll probably rearrange your face if they play for the opposing side...Fred Nerk wrote:beamer wrote:Anyway, a cricket forum perhaps isn’t the best place to fight the culture war, it could easily destroy what little remains of this place. So, back to the match...

They’ll have to decide where the line is drawn, both in terms of age/time and seriousness of content. The ones being dragged up regarding “senior” players seem pretty tenuous, whereas some of the Robinson ones clearly weren’t, and they were significant in number and related to several different forms of hate/discrimination.JGK wrote:JGK wrote:beamer wrote:Maybe I’ve posted all that too soon... They need a policy going forward, which may need to extend to banning players from Twitter and similar platforms and deleting existing accounts. As for any punishments, we’ll wait and see, but surely the views of past black and Asian England cricketers count for more than the views of a Prime Minister with past form for racist comments and his nodding dog culture (war) secretary?
