MacGill likely to miss India series to undergo knee surgery
http://www.smh.com.au/news/cricket/macgill-may-skip-india-for-op-to-save-career/2007/11/26/1196036811124.html
I think his career is over. It probably rules him out of the rest of the Australian season, and will the Aussie selectors pick a 37 year old leg spinner for an overseas tour with no bowling under his belt? Unlikely.

Hmmm would Aus go without a specialist spinner, and look at Pup/Roy to fill the void?

At this very moment in time I think it's safe to say that England have greater depth in spin bowling than Australia do. When was the last time that could be said-1950's? When we had Laker and Lock spinning their web together?

Even in the ashes immediately prior to TGM's arrival, Fat Eddie and Tuffers had it all over Australia's spinners

No, but if we can get JGK to put a few bob on Magoo playing the series, we should be safe.

Pick Hogg says Gilchrist
Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist believes Australia must play a spinner against India in the up-coming Test series and that Bradd Hogg (pictured) is a viable alternative.

Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has expressed his preference for a spin option in the upcoming Tests against India - and has backed Brad Hogg for the job if Stuart MacGill is not fit.
With leg-spinner MacGill battling hand and knee problems, and considering an operation on the latter, suggestions have been made Australia could confront the Indians with four specialist fast bowlers in the first Test.
But Gilchrist, who will be back in state colours for Western Australia this weekend, said he would like to keep to a slow bowler as well as the pace of Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Mitchell Johnson - and his WA colleague Hogg was ready if MacGill wasn't.
"A spin option is always a good one to have in any Test line-up, it doesn't matter what conditions you are playing in," Gilchrist said.
"I think he (Hoggy) is ready to go, I don't think there is any doubt about that if he gets a chance if selected.
"He has shown great form, and never let Australia down in one-day cricket, and he is really keen to play Test cricket again."
WA will take on Tasmania this weekend, with games important for the state's season as well as the individuals involved.
With MacGill's future unclear, after inconclusive tests on his hand and wrist as well as a degenerative bone-on-bone knee problem, Hogg's performance could have a huge bearing on whether he adds to his four Test caps.
And with both Australian openers also struggling - Phil Jaques with mumps and Matthew Hayden with knee tendonitis - WA opener Chris Rogers' luckless season could be about to turn.
Gilchrist said whoever makes up the Australian line-up, the Indians would provide a bigger challenge than the recent series against Sri Lanka.
"I don't mind if they don't make a game of it, we have just got to win. But I'd expect they are going to be a bit more formidable in their batting," Gilchrist said.
"They have got huge names in that top six ... and guys that have played well against us not just in India but over here in Australia.
"They will be very confident, they are leading Pakistan at the moment, and they will be in a buoyant mood when they get here I am sure."
And despite an apparently seamless transition from the retirements of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, Gilchrist said immediate judgements over Australia's next generation should be avoided.
"We will have make that call over time, over a number of series or over a year or two," Gilchrist said.
"There is no doubt the impact McGrath and Warne had on our bowling stocks, and Langer and (Damien) Martyn had on our batting stocks.
"It is going well, and that series against Sri Lanka was of vital importance to us to prove to ourselves that we can be competitive in Test cricket without those guys.
"We will take great confidence from that."
