C'mon, it's not like his international has been egregious FFS! Give him a little bit of respect. Test ave 36, not bad considering he plays half his games in UnZud, averages 32 in ODIs and has 135 wickets to his name, looks like a Picasso painting of George C Scott merged with a Picasso painting of Martin Sheen.
A little vanilla maybe, but with little choclate chips in.

Looks like what Gollum would have when he was a hobbit.

Re: Styris ends international career
I wasn't saying he was a BAD player.
Just like a more boring version of Jonathan Meades trundling along with bat and ball.
Few shall mourn his international career passing.
Much preferred Big Jake Oram for entertainment. (Nicer guy too. Styris was always a brash tit.)

Well, I don't feel he needs to be lauded. I just don't think he needs to be derided. He's a bit of a wanker, but he's done little you could call horrendous. It just puzzled me, really, I suppose.

Re: Styris ends international career
I agree with the Monkey, he was an over-achiever, did well to make a successful international career out of modest talent.
The era he played in New Zealand seemed to specialise in these scrapping bits and pieces all rounders - Astle, Harris, McMillan, Oram, McCullum with Vettori and Cairns the two with a bit more talent to be genuine all-rounders (maybe Oram too if he could hold his body together).
In those NZ teams the batting actually got stronger when you got through the rubbish at the top of the order like Sinclair, Marshall and Vincent and got down to numbers 5-10.

Re: Styris ends international career
I guess NZ has a history of producing this type of player because it's always going to be a country of limited resources, population of 4 million with rugby the dominant sport, and not many first-class teams to pick from. So compared to other countries they're not going to produce a super-talented batsman or bowler as frequently, as a result multi-skilled players are valuable in terms of squeezing the best possible out of what they have available, particularly in one-day cricket where they've more consistently overachieved than they have in Tests.Gary 111 wrote:I agree with the Monkey, he was an over-achiever, did well to make a successful international career out of modest talent.
