LLL, although the top rank might have been achieved through an innings against England, the player has to have scored a shed load of runs against everyone to get to the top ranking. Thus, it's not an indictment of England.

This is pathetic that today's batsmen have peak ratings that are higher than the likes of Lara, Richards, Barrington etc.

Runs scored have different rating values depending on pitch and match conditions and the standard of the opposition ...it may well be a positive reflection on the English bowling attack that caused the batsmen's ratings to peak against them ...the downside is that England seems to come up against a lot of good batsmen in their peak fiorm

No there is no subjective judgement of pitch and match conditions. Its simple maths - runs count more depending who the bowler was and what his ranking is. Similarly the points for the wickets depend on who the batsman was.

Is Sanga the first ever Sri Lankan batsman to be ranked number 1? I guess Aravinda must have been close in the mid 90's, but with Lara, Tendulkar, and Steve Waugh at their peaks during the same period, I doubt he ever made it to the top spot.

There's also a ranking depending on other scores in the match ...ie scoring 80 runs against an attack will score a higher rating if in a low scoring game than in a high scoring game

I can't get enough of watching this bloke bat. IIRC correctly he's scored 150+ in each of his last 4 Tests. Terrific that the rankings reward such red hot form.

So you are saying runs scored against England don't garner many points?
