Re: Aust Tour of South Africa
To be honest though, it does seem to be pretty easy to get into the Aus side these days. A couple of decent T20 performances and suddenly he's in line for a Baggy Green.....

True, but not surprising given the swag of "greats" that have left since 06-07. The NSP has been playing "rabbit out of the hat" roulette since then, picking anyone who looks remotely talented, hoping they are a new Steve Waugh, Shane Warne or Glen McGrath. It's not quite that easy.

Re: Aust Tour of South Africa
James Pattinson is hardly a washed up old hack. He's 21, FFS. And he was a reserve on the Sri Lanka tour. Surely he should be next in line.
And Cummins has played two first class games and picked up a stress fracture in one of them. Didn't exactly take stacks of wickets, either.
Yes, he clearly has talent, but have we really seen any evidence so far of an ability to A) swing the ball, and B) maintain the pace and bowl well for more than 4 overs at a time?

I didn't say "washed up hack", Trev. I said "pea-hearted Vomit". There's a significant distinction.

It is too early for Cummins. I hope I am proved wrong but you can see a 2 year pace blunting injury happening too him as he bowls his 40th over against Kallis and Amla and AB etc.

I think they need to start looking for a replacement for Cot as well. I don't think he's got it at this level anymore.

He had problems after being bowled into the ground in the Shield final. I'm hoping they have selected him so he can just experience being part of the squad without playing a test.

So Midge, Copeland and Cot to bowl with Elmer?

If so, surely he'd be better off actually bowling for NSW?

Agreed.
Although the article did state -
“It’s also likely that after the start of the second Test in South Africa, players from the squad who miss selection may return to Australia so they can play for their states or Australia A and be match ready for the start of the Vodafone Test Series against New Zealand in Australia.”

Rhino should be available for the first test. He is expected to play a Shield game at the end of October.

Still reckon Copeland will be a handful if the wickets have juice. But Rhino should be first picked if fit.

Do the underage fast bowling restrictions apply at Test level?

No
Re: Aust Tour of South Africa
Then I hope Cummins gets another couple of years development before he gets a Test

Cummins of age before we expected.
If all pacemen are fit there will be a bit of a selection dilemma. Harris and Johnson should be no brainers with the other two fighting out assuming that a spinner will be picked.

At least one not dissimilar to Harris.

Isn't that the whole problem with Midge?

point 1 - WGAF?
point 2 - apparently this is the new selection policy. If you do something in T20, you're as good as in for the longer forms.

Good to see that the technology will be in place for the tests and ODIs. Seems only India objects to DRS.
Dippenaar thinks SA should play Harris instead of Tahir in the tests.
