On this day 97 years ago the English would have been putting the finishes touches on their diabolical planning for the invasion of Turkey.
Weird that the incompetence of the ruling class miltary twats gave rise to our true national day.
Enjoy your tea Dem and make sure you swallow all that cream..

It's the 30th anniversary of the ZX Spectrum - a true English achievement.
Oh, Happy St. Georges Day.
Oh, Happy St. Georges Day.

Big in the UK I know, we lost out & where drowned with the Commodore 64 hype. The ZX wins by the street in terms of name coolness.

Re: Happy St George's Day!
I had a Commodore 64. Can barely remember any games from it though, I know there was a Batman game that I found really hard but if I loaded the second side of the tape it would get me to the last level which I could complete.
There was also one in a desest where you could stab cactus's to get water, but I can't remember the name of it. Then there was Impossible Mission where a dude at the beginning says "Stay a while.... Stay Forever!".
Was there some game with a fox too? I seem to rememeber a fox or something.
Games were really f*cking hard back in the day too, was a huge achievement to complete any game whereas today as long as you put the time in there is barely any game that is too hard to actually complete..

I reckon they win in terms of gameplay, creativity and variety of games - I think there ended up being something like 20,000. They also spawned an abundance of programmers that the games today are influenced by.

As well as being the (reputedly) 448th birthday of Wm. Shakespeare it's also the 84th birthday of the "Lollipop Girl", Mrs Shirley Temple Black and would have been the 76th birthday of "The Big O". Here's something to fit Viks' mood:

Re: Happy St George's Day!
I meant the weather appeared to be depressing you. Roy O was married twice although neither wife is alive. His first wife, Claudette, died in a motorcycle accident in 1966. His second wife, Barbara, passed away at the end of last year. I'm unaware of your marital status but I'm sure you're very content whatever it is. It was really meant as a tribute to "The Big O" who was noted for songs that were depressing in content but uplifting in delivery.

It's a pity such diatribes as these which regularly appear on these boards at this time of year like daffodils but not as pleasing have no basis in fact. The planning stage had long passed for the "diabolical" invasion of Turkey (or rather the Ottoman Empire - Turkey did not come into existence until 1922) with which we had been at war since the previous November after it had allowed its ports to be used by German ships to attack Russia. The naval assault on the Dardanelles Straits had begun on 19 February as this shows:
Gallipoli Campaign
Whilst you are perusing this you may care to scroll down to the list of casualty figures and compare the killed and wounded incurred by the forces of the United Kingdom with those incurred by those of Australia and New Zealand combined and I think you will find that the ratio is 2:1 in favour (although that is unfortunate use of the term) of the UK although I accept that because of the smaller forces the proportionate loss incurred by the ANZAC forces is greater.
As for the diabolical element perhaps you might care to have a look at this and then decide which was the more diabolical:
Armenian Genocide

More than an attempt - since 1844 it has been Our Lady Help of Christians (an alternative name for the Virgin Mary) whose feast day is 24 May:
Who are the Patron Saints of Australia?
