Sri Lankan cricket at it again
http://www.espncricinfo.com/srilanka/content/current/story/623234.html
Sad, really. Their Board is probably the worst in world cricket. Their players deserve better. You'd say "oh, the Government needs to step in" but with Sri Lanka, that's the problem- The Cricket Board is basically an arm of the Government.
And once again you have to ask- What the f*ck is the ICC doing about it? Isn't it very clear in their rules/regulations about ICC member Countries, that the Cricket Board must not have excessive Government influence? If Sri Lanka start picking severely weakened teams, the ICC should ban them from playing.

Re: Sri Lankan cricket at it again
This isn't a govt intervention though.
The ICC events clause isn't unique to the SLC if so. But others do pay a percentage of annual income to the players.
The only overseas 2020 league that is included where the SLC won't be paying the salary for the duration of the tournament is the IPL. Likely because the BCCI didn't release Indians for the SLPL. And SLC gains 10% of every contract worth of the IPL for the NOC given to play there.
2 more disputed clauses are the scrapping of the one business class tticket for spouses and apparently reducing the contract categories, whatever they may be.
SLC doesn't recognise the Player's association, and the players (48 of the 60) nominated de Alwis to represent them as part of the player's association to negotiate on their behalf. Fair enough considering not all are literate.
The ICC didn't ban West Indies during Floyd Reifer's time, can't see them banning Lanka.

It is a good opportunity for Bangladesh. What I didn't understand is that if none of the 60 top players didn't sign their contracts, why are only the top 23 banned?
Re: Sri Lankan cricket at it again
Because the other 37 were signing for buggerall anyway?

Possibly. The point should be emphasised to the top 23 - it's like the board is prepared for them to be shit, but not ultra shit. The players have the upper hand.
Re: Sri Lankan cricket at it again
Unless the Board is looking to make an example of the most senior, well known players, whilst pretending to extend a hand to the younger, vulnerable players.

And if Sanga and Mahela are refusing to sign, that's enough for me to be convinced it's the Board, and not the players, who are at fault. Two of the finest men in the game, they are.

Samaraweera retires?
http://www.espncricinfo.com/srilanka/content/current/story/623605.html
Why offer a contract if not going to be picked?
Might even have scraped 5 tests if he played for the next three years.

Samaraweera's retirement confirmed. Also seems more could follow.
Jayasuriya, overstaying his welcome in the national team and cutting short others'.

I think they settled the row. Thilan Samaraweera quit however. Retired from international games! Dropped and denied a chance to make merry against Bangars may have prompted the outrage! We know how much the islanders lovve playing their northern neighbors. Lad had a very good average of 48 in tests though and looked to cross the 100 test mark.

He's only played 81, the century is a fair way off considering SL don't play as many as England, Australia etc. and he's 36. Always seemed to be one of those anomalous 50-plus averages, from which he's dropped back slightly now.

Now they need assistance from the govt after the debts incurred due to the Hambanthotta stadium.
SLPL's in threat again after a case meant that one of the major holding companies' assets were frozen.

Is this what the Sri Lanka Premier League (the super 4 tournament thingummy) has become? Barely any crowds, no overseas internationals afaik, and got a sponsor only a couple of days ago. Bad times at SLC.
