Debate of the day
After SS's recent exploits, the best since Bradman tag is being liberally floated in the media.
Where do people think he stands among the best in our storied test batting history?

Re: Debate of the day
Silly argument. There are so many variables that its impossible to fairly compare players of different eras. I wonder how Smiths figures would look if he faced the same attacks that Bradman or even Ponting did.
Re: Debate of the day
Test cricket is probably the weakest it has ever been at the present time. However you can only compete against those of your generation and Smith has racked up the runs.

Sangakkara as a specialist batsman averaged well over 60 iirc. May be mistaken, but it was closer to 70.
He's a fantastic batsman, but best since is always a foolhardy prediction.

Re: Debate of the day
I don’t think Test bowling is as weak as say 10 years ago. Maybe a lack of out-and-out pace, outside of Australia at least who Smith obviously doesn’t have to face.
He’s got a clear weakness in Bangladesh, averages less than 30 there... still, I’m sure Bradman would have found it tough there as well

I think Steyn, Morkel and Rabada still have a bit of has left in the tank.

Yeah, I’m not saying the Aussies are the only genuine pace bowlers, but there’s not too many around elsewhere. Steyn and Morkel are getting towards the end of the road, though Rabada is the obvious successor. Pakistan can usually find one or two of genuine pace but the other Asian countries (and England and NZ) aren’t known for it and even WI field mostly unremarkable fast-medium bowlers these days.taipan wrote:beamer wrote:I don’t think Test bowling is as weak as say 10 years ago. Punter at his peak was a thing of beauty. But hard to argue against Tweek's current figures.

After a long time, India is producing some faster bowlers too.
