Marsh replaced Handscomb. Scored more runs in one innings than Handscomb in two Tests, and bowled more overs.

I'm not sure how the selectors came up with this particular decision, but it turned out OK.

Shaun Marsh would have to be one of the most uninteresting batsman I have seen in International cricket.in his last innings he made 2 scoring shots in his first 38 balls whilst Smith was scoring pretty often at the other end.

I think the Poms have a chance of winning this. The pitch will offer help to the quicks on days 1and 2 and then settle into a road for the next two days. day five will see the pitch start to offer help to spinners and quicks.

The Poms should play Wood and Overs should be jabbed up. Malfoy should carry the drinks. Otherwise I doubt the Poms will make other changes. Why they bothered to have Crane on tour is a mystery. Every Pom commentator I've heard says he is too green. However the kid did force himself into the Spiv team earlier this year and bowled well.

Malan's leggies were more than respectable in Perth, so as a fall back he should do a lot of bowling in the nets.

Aside from Starc there will be no changes for Oz. Expect the Hollow Man to fail with the bat and ball and drop a couple. I also expect an injury to Stinky Bog. KP will replace him for the fifth test.

What the hell, damn the torpedoes, I'll go there. I agree with you! A lot of the more recent 'nicknames', spewing forth like ... well, spew ... are contrived and unfunny. I'm not even sure whether they are (desperate) bids for glossary inclusion any more ... some are just so weak. Certainly many are not in general use and unlikely ever to be in general use, being unwieldy and unfunny. They're probably not worthy of the efforts put into the author's perseveration (and I'm using that term rather than perseverance deliberately).

IMO forum nicknames shouldn't (and won't) get into the glossary unless they have some general use and recognition, even if one individual uses them incessantly, [u] and require explaining[/u}. So, for example, 'Fleas' (original author unknown) is more interesting and thus worthy of glossary inclusion (not to mention witty, even if it's only low level wit) than 'Serbo-Chokarian', which has neither wit nor charm, and possibly hints at an ethnic slur.

Other examples: 'mishmash' is at least interpretable, as is 'Bog'. I'm not sure they actually need to be in the Glossary, because they're easily interpretable. "GCS' is in fairly general use and has the appeal of being close to GSC in letter face, if not in the player's actual ability, but it requires explanation at least as far as 'Grade Cricket Slogger' being the original opinion of many about the player concerned..

Finally, the glossary, which I've neglected, was originally developed to assist new forumers who did not share our (now) 10-15 years of history and banter together; it wasn't meant to serve as a repository for every lame sledge contrived by a forumer for a player he disliked. There haven't been many new forumers in recent times (if any) and so I'm not even sure that the glossary even has a purpose any more.

Agreed. In addition some are so contrived to become meaningless. I recall Danny doing a very funny pastiche a few years ago.

I disagree on both points.

Though I've parodied it myself, when the nicks fall thick and fast, as if it's a daily puzzle.

The best part of the Glossary is not the overprofusion of nicknames.

The main problem "with" the Glossary is that there are only a dozen or so reasonably-regulars left here. To that extent Horrie is right that it has no function. There are practically no new visitors who need it.

puke Shyte = Luke Wright, a sometime Pomgolian player. Name invented by an English poster.

Peter Hanscomb is called Wank by Skully and The Sneak by me. My name for him refers to the way he plays cricket on the edge. It was PH who persuaded Steve Smith to look to the players on the balcony who wanted him to review a decision.

Smith subsequently was widely criticised but the Sneak's sharp practice received little attention.

Personally I don't give a rats tossbag about censorious views on nicknames. As far as I am aware people are free to use whatever nickname they wish. Some are funny and others are not. Some are a play on the name and others reflect on the appearance, character or cricketing attributes/deficits of a particular player.

And that is why they are there, irrespective of what lardy and taipan think. Fromage asked for update additions and people suggested the nicks be added.

The Glossary is meant to be useful and explanatory, not a homage to any one particular poster's wit.

Stoopid story doing the rounds is Hanscomb will play at the expense ofUber Koala. Bog would move to 3 and the Sneak would bat at 5.

Uber has done nothing wrong to miss with two half centuries in four knocks.

After the downfall on Tuesday, the weather has been sunny and mild. Hopefully the pitch will offer the quicks some movement over the first two days. The only worry is that it will become a road.
