beamer wrote:Is it really necessary to blame the TMS commentators for everything? Brexit, Trump, climate change, the Middle East perhaps? I can only assume Aggers refused to sign your scorecard on the boundary when he was fielding at fine leg during your childhood.
It’s all about the players today and their inability to handle it when it didn’t go smoothly. And having lost to two shit teams they now have three matches of backs against the wall. Only themselves to blame. Or then again maybe it was the ghosts of Johnners, Arlott, Frindall and CMJ that made them ****** it up.
Nope, despite your wild whirlwind worldwide trip, I didn't blame the commentators for a single thing that happened & happens on the field. If you didn't read what I wrote, but want to launch into me anyway, fire away if it calms you down.
And no, despite your other indignant dig, Agnew* never snubbed me, pissed on my chips. etc - I don't know him personally.
Whereas I've explained pretty clearly, I thought, why I think he's a weak commentator: fickle in judgment, lacking depth & balance ....
But if you appreciate his quality, and think he merits the daring "Voice of Cricket" tag, again, fair enough. A view's a view. Is Bails a forum, a political party, or an army?
(*btw: FWIW: I don't go much on the nick "Aggers", "Daggers" etc. At the time, it fitted "Jonners", "Blowers", etc.: being jolly old Eton "house" language, kept on as a sort of endearment and tease about the elite public school upbringing. But surely no need to dub everyone an "-ers", and pretend everyone went to jolly elite old private schools? Vaughners? Swanners? Anders? Guhers? )

Left for PNG couple of days before the first origin game and only got back on Thursday. Now seeing the shitty southerlies that sent us all that cold weather but pushed the boat there in record time are still hanging around, I'm decamping for the Territory later today, so will be intermittent at best for a couple of months.
Miss me?

Re: World Cup 2019
Surely it was Johnston who bestowed the nickname on his eventual successor... “oh, Aggers, do stop it” re. Botham’s leg over? A tradition worthy of being passed down through generations, as TMS itself is. When it eventually fades away, so too will England’s summer game and the five-day format. Agree the summarisers don’t merit the “-ers” nickname though, they will always be a lesser species than those who describe the ball-by-ball action.PeterCS wrote:beamer wrote:Is it really necessary to blame the TMS commentators for everything? Just felt you turning your anger on the commentators when it deserves to be aimed at the players was out of order. I know there’s an anti-elitist thing there with you, which I fully agree with in terms of politics, that other Johnners shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near Downing Street... if only he’d turned his attention to cricket instead, he could have been a harmless national treasure, right?

Re: World Cup 2019
Well done to Lankans, and particularly Slinga with the Ball. England managed to get their usual Gilly choke in on a slowish Pitch.
Still expecting them to rebound from the loss, and play the Snoozies in the Final.

An English fail ... is there anything better?
Of course the BoJo hosts will rebound and take the Gilly in a canter. The script is written - just read it!

Re: World Cup 2019
There's no way in my view England will make the final. I had them as certs for the semis but they seem to be flat track bullies from what i see and too many of them have off days to win the WC. India and Australia have better 11s and NZ just might go all the way with the efficient game they have.

Re: World Cup 2019
Yeah, I think NZ are the value bet now at 8/1, they’ve demolished weak sides and kept their nerve in a close one on a slow pitch - also they don’t have quite the expectation of Eng, Aus and Ind.
Yesterday’s result certainly changes the tournament as the expected series of meaningless dead rubbers will now be largely restored to matches with consequence. Only Afghanistan are out of the equation (though the Yarps need several snookers with only pink and black left on the table). I think 10 points will probably get a team through, and it could even be a bunch of teams on 9 contesting the fourth spot, if results play out a certain way and maybe weather intervenes again. If someone like Sri Lanka or Bangladesh does sneak into fourth, topping the table will become more important.

Re: World Cup 2019
They would have to keep India down to 250 then hold their nerve to perfection in the case.
Anyway, Kohli not messing around, even if Rahul is playing Test cricket.

Yeah, fully expect them to get rolled for 140 or so. A couple of partnerships, though, and you never know...
