Computer Problems Empty Computer Problems

Post by Guest Sat 15 Dec 2007, 00:08

Just lately, every time I open this forum, my modem starts making whirring noises until it gets so bad, it sounds like my vacuume cleaner and I have to close it.
It happens even if I have no other programme open, so it can't be anything to do with conflicting programmes.

Any ideas?
Am I really going to have to restore the computer?

Seriously now, it's the tower thing that everything is plugged into at the back - where the button is that you press for five seconds if you need to close down when it all freezes. I thought that was the modem. It whirrs terribly sometimes when I'm on this forum.

Yeah Dem, Ang is making sense, sounds like your fan is on the blink. If you take the hood off the PC and vacuum around a bit you may free it up.

What a clever little shield maiden she is (and I agree that it sounds the most likely culprit). Certainly hope it's not your hard drive. I fried one a few years ago and lost a sh!te load of data. I tend to burn backup DVDs pretty regularly now as a result of that little disaster.

I took the cover off my tower and the dust inside was unbelievable, I had to get the Dyson noozle in there!

Meaty, I've burned out a hard drive recently, it's not fun losing everything, got a burner now so if it happens again everything is backed up. Also the hard drive didn't make a noise when it died it just stopped.

My hard drive clunked and whirred and the PC wouldn't work properly. The local computer shop quickly confirmed it was a shot HD. And yeah, quite a few years of personal records and files went up in smoke.

I think PCs build up a lot of static which sucks the dust in. I know when I added an extra hard drive recently for additional storage (damn, teenage daughters take up a lot of HD space with digital images and MP3s!!) the guts of my machine was full of dust.

You're better off using a can of compressed air if you have one, the hoover might cause more damage...

Not that either will help if it's your hard drive making the noise.

well, you need to remove dust in your tower. So disconnect the power plug, take it outside and use the blower in the hoover.

For that fan you need to disconnect the fan and apply some mineral oil to your fingertips and getly put some on the fan bearings. Before putting back the cover on the tower, replug it and check if the fan works.
