Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
Says he didn't get a fair crack of the whip and blah blah blah.
Well done shotless - by having a big whinge in the press, you've 100% guaranteed that they'll never pick you again.

Not surprised - are you, really?
Ian Bell: 1 century in 19 Tests.
Nick Compton: 2 centuries in 9 Tests.
You do the mathematical equations...

Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
And yet Bell isn't even talked about as a candidate for dropping (except on here and other forums!) It's a choice between Compton and Bairstow, with Root having cemented his place somewhere in the top six, and KP a banker to come back in. Cook, Trott and Bell are seen as certainties. Fair enough, in the case of the first two...
Still, Bell's getting towards the age at which one bad series for an England player means the exit door. Probably a couple of years before he reaches that stage though.

Bell will probably be top scorer for the whole series now ... unless Trev agrees with this prediction.

Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
"[England's team director] Andy Flower said go away and score runs. I have done that. How many runs is scoring runs?"
As I see it:
He was averaging 40 in Test cricket before this series in some toughish environments.
He's got over 650 runs at 55 for Somerset(and Worcs) this season.
Nearly 200 runs versus Australia so far in three innings.
His case is decent.
Even if you wanted to keep Jonny Knicks in (which is pretty ridiculous with such stark technical flaws) - let us take a look at Ronnie Knicks:
His last 19 Tests:
898 runs @ 32.07. As mentioned, 1 ton.
Nicky No Shots has 479 @ 31.93, 2 tons.
Not dissimilar and certainly worthy of a 'big' sook.

Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
The reason Compo's been dropped is that he has looked absolutely awful in his last 3 Tests. Its one thing getting out cheaply - its another just being, well, utterly shite. I can only remember a few batsmen (Habib?) that looked so out of their depth.
6 innings, 54 runs, 224 balls. 6 hours of batting and he's only hit 2 fours, one of them an edge through the slips.
Yes Ian Bell is a shitmuncher but at least he's scored 165 runs in his last 6 innings and hit 20 or so boundaries out of the middle of his bat and done a passable impression of a Test batsman (before throwing his wicket away).

It's a fact of team sport that a new player in a team has to do more to keep his place than a long established one. The "class is permanent" theory. Well, we've always known Bell has class, but he's missing one or two other things you need to be a great player.

Yeah Gary, you go on about three terrible Tests - not arf.
How many clutches of three Test failures has Ian Bell had (that apparently warrant a dropping). No need to look... I can tell you: a shitload.

Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
the difference is that Belf is the future of English cricket and Compo is the future of Somerset
poor Compo has received greater doses of Trevving than any other player..he has been crulled
Hpwever I noted more than a month ago his place was at risk because of his carp cc form...trev gave me a right old bucketing for that...my bags overflowed

This. With a cherry on top.
His one man pity party isn't helping. "What more can I do?" after scoring a couple of 50s isn't the most persuasive plea.
That said, I'd still back him to score more Ashes runs than Johnny B and his myriad of deficiencies.
Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
phurt...you could pick him against our mob and he would look like Gordon Greenidge...but then again so would Aunt Jemima Puddleduck

Compo hasn't done himself any favours with his whinge.
Two words for him- Mike Carberry. He has more of a right to whinge it up, IMO- One test, wasn't the worst by any means, consistent County runs year after year, and yet constantly ignored.

Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
Even if he did have a point (which he hasn't - he's shite), whining about it in the press just lacks class. A bit like his batting.
That last test innings of his (7 off about 900 deliveries) was so dreadful that I was embarrassed for him.

Yeah, that innings was particularly dire. What I did like about that innings, though, is that he didn't look like he was going to literally shit himself and close his eyes tight anytime the ball pitched on a shorter length.
Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
Apparently a few years back, Compo wanted a member of the Press to interview him so that he could explain how hard he was trying to get into the England team. I think the Journo was the Guardian's Andy Bull?
Anyway, he's clearly a very determined guy, but perhaps that determination and intensity is channelled in the wrong way. The runs or lack of should be the only things doing the talking.

Sorry, I thought you'd seen Bairstow bat in Test matches.
Re: Compton has a big sook about bring dropped
And we needed quick runs, he played for his own future rather than the team, and ended up failing on both counts. I know he wasn't alone in not playing for the team that session, Trott also made Cook look like Chris Gayle by comparison, but he has a few more credits in the bank with the selectors, like 40-odd Tests averaging 50... in any case that innings from Compton just didn't create the right impression in any sense.Neil D wrote:Even if he did have a point (which he hasn't - he's shite), whining about it in the press just lacks class. He didn't create a very good impression. He was shit. But, as I've mentioned before, when Aus's very good seam attack is giving our line-up the hurry up, who do you think is going to remain at the wicket longer?

Have to agree. At least Compton gives the impression that he is prepared to guts it out.
