Re: England v New Zealand, 5xODI + 1xT20, 9-23 Jun, 2015
Lost it in the last 5 of our batting innings, by getting all out. Not sure we'd have been so injudicious in a chase - Rashid and Willey in particular should be, and were, annoyed with their shots.

Willey got a few up around the 85mph mark today. Not sure he was ever any quicker than that.
He gave a good account of himself. Funnily enough, I thought England played quite well. Wood had a decent debut, Willey was no disgrace, Rashid bowled better than his figures, Stokes chipped in.
On a flattie-and-a-half, the bowlers stuck at it, but they lost the game with the bat. The fifty runs those five overs they threw away would've been massive.
Still shite at catching, too.
Re: England v New Zealand, 5xODI + 1xT20, 9-23 Jun, 2015
Actually I thought the catching was more the problem. It's not like England have been knocking out 300s on a regular basis.

He was consistently 83-84, touching 89 before his injury. Today he was 78-85. A bit of a difference really. But regardless of his speed, he did well to stem runs in the powerplay and made crucial breakthroughs in his second spell in the second powerplay. He should be pretty pleased with himself overall. Got to be less frenetic when batting, he seemed pretty nervous throughout. He's got a proper game under his belt now, so should be given the rest of the series to make his mark, then vie with Plunkett for that number 9 spot. Wood has to be included as a cemented number 10, as much as he can be. He just offers something different

They have to be wary of burning him out though, if he constantly plays all formats. We'll have another Simon Jones on our hands.

There is of course the danger - with England - that they get caught in a No Man's Land between "whacking the shit out of it" or "blocking the shit out of it". Not saying that's your pitfall, Danny, but with England, false dichotomies seem a professional hazard. One extreme or the other.
If you're going to go for it, go for it well (footwork, timing, seek gaps, etc.) rather than losing your head. Otherwise keep the ruddy scoreboard ticking nicely. It's not rocket surgery.
That said, I hope they are evolving. The thinking, as well as the general mindset and strokeplay.

Rule 1 in ODI's - never leave overs remaining on the table.
England left 4.
It's all very well going out there and tonking (in Morg-speak - 'attacking') the sh*t out of the oppos bowling -
but when one or two batsmen misfire, surely it's time to wind in the neck and bat out the overs.
Who knows, another 20 runs might have made the match more interesting.

Morgan said he was happy with 300, not that we'd run out of overs. My problem was that it was every ball getting attacked toward the end, regardless of the wickets falling. Numbers 7-11 should've known there was a chance of getting bowled out and should've been more cute in their shot selection. They all got out tonking or being clever, when the likelihood is that there would've been easier balls to score off. It's of little consequence though, I expect we'll learn more from this sort of occurrence than anything a little more standard.

Jamie Overton gets the call to join his brother in the ODI squad.

Ahh, yeah - two injuries, one replacement. Can't be too confident in Wood's fitness or Willey's willyness.

Odd one. Hasn't really been playing for Somerset this season. Or if he has, I haven't noticed.
Ah, there we go: 4 FC games. 7 wickets. @ 40.
No wonder he's been called up. Impossible to ignore.

Well, at least they didn't call up Jimmy and Sturat I suppose. Or Fatboy Tim, or the tattooed Yarpie qunt with a girl's name...

Yeah, defo - 'the think tank' thought it best to not try these clear cut failures. They just used up 200+ ODIs combined figuring out that they're shithouse. Us mere mortals would've taken at least 500 ODIs to figure out that conundrum. It really wasn't obvious to us plebs.
Re: England v New Zealand, 5xODI + 1xT20, 9-23 Jun, 2015
Well, with Broad and Anderson it was more a case of not getting them injured in a couple of JAMODIs before the Ashes or confirming their self-determined divine right to play all formats, when they won't be contenders for the next World Cup anyway. And the fact they've been pretty shit at one-day cricket in recent times (in Jimmy's case, that means since about 2003).
Bresnan and Dernbach, on the other hand, hopefully stamped NTPFEA by now. May as well pick young bowlers who probably aren't quite good enough as old ones who have proven themselves shite already.

Timothy Thomas Bresnan was included in the ODI side not four games ago, young sir. I think that should tell you all you need to know.
Re: England v New Zealand, 5xODI + 1xT20, 9-23 Jun, 2015
Oh yeah, he was picked for that Ireland washout wasn't he, had forgotten that. Presumably injured then...

Yes he was, along with ANOTHER young Somerset bowler, Lewis Gregory, who appears to have been overtaken in the pecking order by the twins for reasons unspecified.
He must've been awful in the nets. Either that or there's some weird new policy to call up as many random Somerset bowlers as possible. Is Alfonso Thomas England-qualified?

I'm not sure either are right for England. They have been Trevved from an early age, remember. Young Jamie was a tearaway - now he dobs it down like he's a granny.
