Should cricket introduce the double play?
Thinking about the Shane Watson run out, it would make things interesting if Pakistan had been able to run out the other batsman (Katich) by throwing the ball up the other end and running him out as well, thus producing 2 wickets in 1 ball, and a huge swing in the match.
Thoughts?

The ICC looked at this idea a couple of years ago. Therefore it would be right up there as stupidity in the extreme, along with the supersub, the video referral systems as used thus far, and powerplays.

I can't see what harm it would do. It would only very rarely occur, but it's about time the fielding side had a law changed in their favour.

Re: Should cricket introduce the double play?
Well, in yesterday's run out, there was no chance of a double play because both batsmen were in at the other end of the pitch...

Test cricket needs wickets prepared with something on offer for all the disciplines of the game, not this nonsense.

The fielding side has already been the beneficiary of the biggest law change in the game's history.
Though introducing the double play would be a nice progression after we allowed pitching.

Next we'll be suggesting that you get more runs if you hit the ball OVER the boundary rope.

Well apart from completely changing the game for no real reason, it seems a pretty farking stoopid idea.

Seems like the pitch has produced good Test cricket so far.Mick Sawyer wrote:Thoughts?

Maybe if Watson gets a ton tomorrow Mick will be in a better mood.

Re: Should cricket introduce the double play?
A further reflection... I can't see double plays being much of an incentive or bonus for the fielding side. Players might well, instead of making a safe run out, rush things and mess up completely. Imagine how a bloke will feel if he goes to knock off the bails to start a double play and misses the stumps with the ball. Or if a bloke gets run out at one end, then the ball is thrown wildly to the other end and goes for overthrows. And who gets those runs if the batsman out was the original scorer? And when would the ball become dead? What woud stop a player on a missed second half of a double player from going for a further run? Nah, not needed.
