OK, are Americans really that stupid? Empty OK, are Americans really that stupid?

Post by Zat Sun 31 Oct 2010, 20:37

I know the answer is 'yes' but I feel it needs to be highlighted.

From January 2001 until January 2009, Georgw W Bush was president of the USA. During this time, wealth was worshipped to such a degree, and greed allowed to proliferate so widely that the entire US financial system wound up being built on foundations of toothpicks. Not surprisingly, the system came crashing down.

Barack Obama, who took over as Prez in Jan 2009, and his administration have had to try and fix things. A process that was always going to take time.

Now, in the US mid-term elections, the US populace is turning against Obama because things aren't as good as they used to be. So they're going to vote for the party that - now here's the kicker - set things up to go to sh!t in the first place.

Then again, there are plenty of people in Russia who bitched about being oppressed under communisim who were beggig for its return just a few years after Gorbachev.

Maybe it's people who are stupid.

Indeed Zoggy. I rolled my eyes when I saw the news over the weekend of the massive turning of the tide against Obama.

Fat, complacent and on their way to becoming an also-ran Nation. China is sniggering.

Yes, the American population as a whole is stupid. The republicans have also ruthlessly campaigned against and tried to block in congress anything Obama has tried to do, regardless of whether it's good for the nation or not.

They deserve everything they get and will edge towards being a democratic version of the USSR- An ailing superpower who refuse to cut their excessive military budget for the greater good.

China will be the world's dominant power by 2014 without a doubt, and their government, whilst not being democratic, is strong enough and smart enough to keep them there for a long time.

I was amazed at this. I was watching a live feed of a US TV show on Saturday arvo (Supernatural) and it was chockers with political ads absolutely bagging candidates. None of the ads even attempted to sell the virtues of a particular candidate.

$320M in corporate and union donations alone. They've got to do something with the money 'coz from what I've seen and read you could fund a campaign on most candidates virtues on pocket change.

sounds like a conservative side of politics tactic the world over. Born to rule and all that.

Qunts.

I would laugh at the Seppos if it wasn't all so serious. The GOP gaining control over the House and undoubtedly supplying the next President will be disastrous for the world economy,

Funny you should say that - the Paulson Hedge Fund (the one that made gazillions by shorting the credit market prior to the GFC) recently spent several hundred million dollars buying Gold Call Options with a strike price of something like $2400 per oz.

Analysis by Peter Hartcher in today's SMH.

A really good argument at the end in favour of compulsory voting.

You've got to admire the T.E.A. Party though.

The blind stalking horse for right-wing Republicanism, attracting the disaffected, the resentful, the opportunistic, crazed and brainless of every hue (... and cry).

It's only a wonder they haven't adopted a pointy-headed cloak with eyeholes (or possibly just one) as their anti-establishment uniform.

I wonder how much of this you can blame on the net. Fifty years ago it would have been "I read it in the paper so it must be true". But running papers is an expensive business so there were only a few extreme ones out there. But anyone (excepting me) can put up there own blog or set up a website and spout crap the flat earthers would baulk at.

I still can't believe that comment about the justice department. And all those groups set up to prove Obama is ineligible to be President when the same charges have been levelled at McCain for years.

We live in scary times.

Yeah very sad to see the state of affairs in the US. Some of the nonsense from the TEA party is so unbelievably funny, the stuff about Americans being the chosen ones in the World and all that. This kind of rhetoric is no different to the Muslim fanatics except that they are branded the bad kind, the kind to be eliminated.

In the case of the Americans a lot more stuff has to hit the fan before they seriously address the balance between Capitalism and Socialism. Most American greed bags also proclaim to be deeply religious. Wonder if this self righteousness is just their defense to themselves that their greed is OK.

Ditto.

Found out the other day that one of the Brothers who taught me is now doing time. Wasn't exactly surprised to hear it.
