We showed the pommys how to play
One Day cricket might be out of style,
But we've been good at it for quite a while,
So may I introduce to you,
A picture we've all loved for years,
of Allan Border's no-name ragtag band...

It was twenty(three) years ago today... 1987

I think that winning the 87 WC was quite possibly the event that really laid the foundation for the dominance of Australian cricket for much of the 90s. The work that Simmo and AB did set the tone for years to come, and the players they brought in learned a lot.

Of course, the selectors these days seem hell-bent on forgetting the lessons learned.

It were a grouse evening. I was listening to a crackly coverage on ABC and actually started to believe we were starting to drag ourselves out of the mid-80s malaise. I never dreamed it would become such a great era.

Went (for a term) to the same high school as the younger brother of one of the 87 WC squad, a couple of years before the event. The player was getting a few Shield matches at that stage. The younger brother tried to live off it in a big way. Except he'd missed out on the cricketing talent in the family, and was generally regarded as a labia.
