No there are no levee banks. Where I call home is sufficiently protected only because Dad realised "well sh!t this is gonna happen evry decade or so".

There is SFA protection for rural Qld because successive govts have decided tunnels under the Brisbane River which no-one uses because of the toll were a better waste of taxpayers money.

That said the people in Depot Hill (really sh!thouse suburb of Rocky) really should sell up or suck it up. Though they are home to the best pub in the world and the world's largest indoor rodeo arena.

Road it to Yepoon, ferry to Gladstone where the Chieftain and the Seneca are, except my brother-in-law is ther only one licenced to fly them. Charter a plane to the Noccundra Hotel, hopefully meet some of the stockmen and than a thousand mile trip home via the back door. To tell you the truth I'm sort of hoping the stockmen don't make it to the pub.

Are these houses on stilts in cyclone zones?

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Given that we had weeks of floods in Southern NSW that didn't go into towns (much) due to levy banks, but that still f*cked over many farmers who were looking at their first serious crops in a decade, I've got the sh!ts in a big way about how the 'appeals' have been launched and flogged to death for Queenslanders hit by the floods, while NSW residents will get SFA.

Also the Fed assistance packages were reportedly capped at $15K for NSW farmers, $25K for Qld, and look like being moved to $25K for Wozzie farmers as well. That's pretty rooted.

The Federal funding should be conditional on flood preotection measures being built. I mean in many places it's not like it's the first time these places have flooded. Not even the first time in the past year.

Darwin homes are probably the most stringently built in regards to cyclones On stilts or not. The problem in '74 was the style of construction to alleviate the tropical heat, plus the construction was a result of low bidders as Darwin was never really thought of as a permanent settlement.

In regads to flood alleviation, the style of flooding in Qld and the size of the properties can make flood alleviation very costly. The Fitzroy River basin is larger than the UK and the area of land that went under this time is larger than NSW.

I'm not talking about preventing the floods covering properties, that would be ludicrous.

But there's no logical reason why towns like Rockhampton, Emerald, Maryborough, etc. couldn't be protected by flood levees. And if you stop the waters getting into built-up areas, you save a fortune on costs.

IIRC the Queenslander houses weren't built with flood protection in mind (although as witnessed a pretty useful feature), it is to let air circulate under and through thouse on the hot/humid days.

And sometimes Mother Nature shows it wouldn't matter what preparations you make. What happened in Ipswich couldn't have been safeguarded against.
