Luke Wright
ODI's...
Played 42 Average 21.42 2x50..... 15 wickets @ 51
T20's...
Played 29 Average 15.72 1x50.... 6 wickets @ 36
In the last 11 T20 matches he has bowled 1 over.
Has he taken over from Ashley Giles as team knob gobbler? Seriously 71 intenational caps? FFS
Get another batsman in there if he isn't going to bowl. Hales, Buttler, Hildreth.... even Pete Trego.

Re: Luke Wright
A mate of mine used to play with him at Sussex. Said he was quality.
I can only assume he is showing massive amounts of talent somewhere to someone and he's just not delivering on the field.
Horrendous record though and should not be persisted with.

He doesn't get many runs.... but he gets them quickly!

Re: Luke Wright
He is a player I hoped would develop into something more, but he's still what he was when he first came into the side, a hit and miss (mostly miss) county slogger and generally innocuous bowler, and must be running out of chances now.
At least we're lucky in that if we had the selection policy of 15 or 20 years ago they would be picking him in Tests and expecting him to be the new Botham/Flintoff/whoever. It's only the limited overs sides where he's wasting a place.
In terms of the names put forward to replace him, looking at that list Bopara's strike rate is actually pretty crap, having seen him bat in county one-day cricket it's hard to believe his international strike rate is similar to Trott's. More evidence of his inability to handle the pressure at a higher level?

Possibly, even as an Essex fan i'm not sure about Bops at the highest level.
As a complete knee jerk, what about someone like Jos Buttler in Luke Wrights role? S/R of 152 in T20 and there's no need for him to be able to bowl.

Or just stick with your Test batsmen, and back them to adapt their game to the different formats?

Re: Luke Wright
Seem to recall Bops spending most of his ODI career doing rebuilding jobs, coming in at six and seven. Probably accounts for his unimpressive s/r.
Anyway, Wright should be out for the one-dayers - Strauss in, Wright out, everyone moves down a place and Collingwood becomes the new pointless number six.

Difficult one. Cook can play limited overs cricket. Sometimes. And Trott, in spite of his crabby exterior, has been known to bash some runs for Warwicks in good time.
On the flipside, England's upturn in one-day and T20 form began when they finally woke up to the idea that you need some strong hitters, to go over the top in the first power-plays. Kieswetter and Lumb did that job at the WC, and got the team off to some quick starts.
Couple of elegant weeds like Bell and Davies (who barely looks strong enough to clear the square) have been a throwback to a plan that doesn't really work, and came a cropper last night when they were out-power-played by Australia by 15-20 runs in a game where it was difficult to hit boundaries once the field was spread and they lost by 4 runs
Re: Luke Wright
He's had chances up the order, though mostly featured him and Shah trying their best to run each other out.Dello wrote:Seem to recall Bops spending most of his ODI career doing rebuilding jobs, coming in at six and seven. Probably accounts for his unimpressive s/r.
I remember him down the order early in his career, when he saw them home alongside Broad in a tight finish, and I thought it showed he clearly had what it takes. Hasn't quite worked out that way since though.

25 games in the top four. Two 50s. S/R in the 60s.
25 games at 6-8. Two 50s. S/R in the 80s.
Turns out his strike rate is much better coming down the order than when coming in early with the field restrictions.

Who else could you throw in to create a side that would be all out without an opposing bowler being credited with a wicket? Inzy and MoYo, TAYne POCson on recent evidence...

Aye, 2 year contract. We're going to have the international equivalent of Indias batting & Zimbabwe's bowling next season.

We produce some of the biggest hitters in English cricket. A diet of pasties and cider will do that to a man.

I think Bopara has played with the fear of being dropped. He tends to play over-cautiously fearing each game may be his last.
Whether that shows they should have more faith... I think it might be the opposite, he doesn't have the temprament to be an international cricketer and they should try someone else instead.
