England ODI post mortem thread
Despite it being one of top ten all time meaningless JAMODI series, it did at least throw up some serious post mortem gristle to chew on- unlike the proper stuff where everyone was great or retired at the right time. Here are the stats:
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=5771;team=1;type=series
Trott was excellent- clearly loves his batting. KP, Bell, Strauss and Prior all had a lean time of it but totally forgiveable after their exertions in the Ashes. They can and will do better. More worrying were the poor returns from Morgan and no sign of light at the end of the tunnel for Collingwood.
There were a few more positives in the bowling- Woakes, Shazhad, Tremlett and to a lesser extent Finn showed they were all genuine ODI bowling options.
Wright and Yardy were the averaging 20 with the bat and 50 with the ball performers they will probably always be. There must be better out there surely?
So what next? Well rest and recovery mostly. I think England should put their feet up and forego the official warmups and use the marathon group stage to find their feet. The squad's been picked so- although if Morgan's crocket it'll probably be Bopara taking his place. Call me a nutjob but why don't they just go stark raving bonkers and call up Blackwell so they won't be forced to play Tredwell at all? Otherwise a bowling attack of Jimmikins, Broad and Swann will be a threat and KP and other series flops could do a lot better on sub-continent wickets. I fear though they've already been nobbled by the f*ckwitted scheduling and it'll be a lost cause.

Re: England ODI post mortem thread
Probably a thread wasn't needed - you've summed it all up pretty well in one post.
Although, I'll add that England are a shambles going into the World Cup. Regardless of injuries, they have no idea who's opening and why, what the batting order should be, nor what the balance of the side - bowlers to batsmen ratio - will be.
On track for another cracking WC campaign, I imagine...

Re: England ODI post mortem thread
An excellent summing up. Many positives, as you say, and a lot more to it than a 6-1 drubbing.
Nice to see someone still seeing the wood for the trees and not just jumping on the lazy "England were a shambles" bandwagon. Could well be surprises in the World Cup if they can just get a bit of rest.

No, you're right once again - England weren't a shambles. They were a well-oiled machine that just came up against a juggernaut of brilliance in the shape of an awesome Australian ODI side.
Steve Smith and David Hussey's mastery of the art of spin bowling was a joy to behold - unplayable at times. Ripping those long-hops straight. Oof. Too good.
In many ways, England leave with their heads held high having claimed - against all odds - a single victory from such a formidable opponent.

Re: England ODI post mortem thread
We will be better in the WC because (fitness permitting) we should have our first choice bowling line-up available. But the batting is a worry - does Prior open? Who's the finisher if Morgan isn't fit?

Reckon England have slipped to # 6 seed for the WC
They are only better than NZ, WI, BD(and ZIM) among test countries

Didn't England beat Pakistan in the last series they played with each other?

Well the phrase I actually used was, "many positives, and a lot more to it than a 6-1 drubbing", but I can see that that's a bit too subtle if you've only got two pigeon-holes marked "Brilliant" and "Rubbish" respectively.Dello wrote:No, you're right once again - England weren't a shambles. Why? Because Pakistan just beat lowly New Zealand? Even Bangladesh did that. Let's not forget that a year ago Aus hammered Pakistan even more than they did us.

Sorry.
Not subtle, just not much of a point. Trott's batting form and a couple of promising showings from one or two younger bowlers don't really add up to "many positives" when balanced against the failings of the rest of the squad.
Mark it down as a series of many positives if you want. Won't correlate with the reality of what happened, though...

Swing a garlic chaplet around, stick some broken bits of host and glue round the sides, drive a stake through its heart and finally cut its head off.

Dello was calling him Convictions years ago ...
Instead of playing with it, he honours some of Oz's earliest white settlers. Well, he has a sense of history, I suppose.

Are you sure? Sounds a bit clever for me. Probably a lardy original.

I thought it was you. Maybe it was Lever. Or Danny. Don't think it was His Lardship.
It was an Inside Job.

As always.
My pre-series prediction was 4-1 with some weather knocking about. I was way off with my weather forecasting.

I'll take the credit, don't get me wrong. But my level of punnery is more like Prior Prior Pants on Fire.
"Convictions" is a whole other level of sophistication.

Possibly you're hiding your light under a Dubya Bushel there.

As long it's not a Gary Bushell, I can live with that.

Re: England ODI post mortem thread
To answer my own question, I've been to Wiki.
He's a musician, apparently:
Since Garry reformed the Gonads in 1994, the band has recorded six studio albums, including 'Live Free, Die Free' (2008) and 'Glorious Bastards' (2010) along with a split ep with Italian punk band Klasse Kriminale. They have toured the USA, played dates in Germany and Sweden, and have more than 25,000 myspace friends. In 2010 it was announced that Bushell was recording a solo Ska album. The Gonads Greater Hits Volume One will be released in 2011.
I liked that Viz version of him where he was an actual bear.

Private Eye did a good lookalike of him: Bushel pictured next to a photo of a ..um.. ..sex toy model of a woman's hairy...er...part.
Uncanny likeness.
(Come to think of it that sounds too rude for Private Eye so was maybe Viz too.)
