Huge Earthquake Hits Japan
An 8.4 Earthquake has hit Japan triggering huge Tsunami's. There are warnings for Russia & many of the northern Pacific islands. Pictures of the huge waves are amazing.
8.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Japan
Is anyone seeing this on the news?? Holy f*ck! A tsunami has hit and a wall of debris filled water has reached Miyagi, which is 100 kms from the coast FFS!
I have many friends in Japan,. Praying they're all ok.
And this was actually a disaster that I found out about first on facebook. Suddenly heaps of my friends posted messages about a huge earthquake that had just struck Tokyo. About 10 minutes later, it showed up on the news.

Imagine being a Japanese farmer in Sendai/Miyagi, suddenly seeing a huge wall of water with still burning houses and boats heading towards you.

Any idea how long it would take a tsunami originating 100 kms off the Japanese coast to reach Hawaii? Scary stuff.Big Dog wrote:40 Million homes without power in Tokyo. Many houses & an oil refinery are on fire.

And maybe we can get an "on-the-ground" account from taccy at some point (when the power's back on).

Looking at the pictures i'd say there is going to be a big casualty list.

Amazing images on ABC news. Wow, let's hope these waves DON'T reach other places across the seas.

Yeah, one fears what the death toll might be.
They just released an interesting speech by the Japanese PM. He made a point of saying that there had been no indications of any radiation leakage from their nuclear power stations. I thought it was an odd comment in the context of what was going on.

In the context i'd say it's very relevant! Naturally people would be worried about the state of nuclear reactors after a massive earthquake. Imagine radiation leakage in a City the size of Tokyo..... Best to avert anyones fears.
fortunately, most buildings in Tokyo are designed to withstand major earthquakes. They also have a sophisticated canal system designed to channel water should there be a tsunami. The areas where the tsunami did the most damage were mostly farming areas, so hopefully that means the death toll is minimal.
The reason there is such incredible footage of the tragedy is because people in Japan have been waiting and expecting an earthquake of this magnitude for 80 years. Based on history, this is long overdue. 'The big one' as it is called. There are numerous cameras constantly trained on certain parts of Tokyo, waiting to capture this type of event. I just hope this isn't the precursor to something even bigger......

Nuclear emergency declared!
Don't know when the PM spoke about radiation leakage, but this report just came in about 20 minutes ago.

Must be bloody scary. Even if you escape being crushed by falling buildings, swallowed by the earth opeing up or mauled and drowned by a huge wave, you may at that moment be getting nuked to death without realising it...
